There are so many things to do in nyc on the 4th. Especially since it falls in the middle of the week. There are several cruises that go around for the fireworks show.

For the 4th itself, there is no better option than positioning yourself in view of the Macy's Fireworks.
You are specifically asking about the weekend, however, so I'm not sure this is what you want to hear. This weekend is really just any other summer weekend. A lot of the other July 4th stuff (the music festival on Governor's island, the long beach fireworks, shelter island fireworks, etc) are all the weekend AFTER.
So, I would say do whatever NYC weekend activity you like best. You won't be missing any special July 4th events, and you'll enjoy your limited time here to it's best potential!
Personally, I get out of the city. I have friend's with a secluded place in the Berkshires and I head there for big summer national holidays. Memorial day, July 4th, Labor day.
Fourth of July week is always slow for me so the perfect time for a little quiet Caribbean R and R. I just hope I can find a volunteer to rub sun block on my butt.
In my profession, it's 2Q, and things will be busy for the next few weeks. While it will be cool to see the fireworks during that respite, from a hobby standpoint, likely to be visiting friends in Florida, and in Vegas at the end of the month. Those will be the real fireworks this July!
