To me ambiance is everything.

Gramercy Tavern is my fav for a big night out but try one of these cool and delicious places.

La Esquina Corner Deli - Mexican  very cool place
Crispo - Italian  get the bone marrow and bucatini
Osteria Morini - Italian   great pasta   cool place
Fette Sau - BBQ Brooklyn   worth the trip
Brasserie Les Halles - Anthony Bourdain
Little Owl - brunch , lunch , dinner

If you like fish Pompano or Le Bernadin.  Most will say Il Molino is best for Italian but well, I don't know if that is true.

I'll add one - Macao Trading Company.  It is Portuguese Chinese fusion in a very cool atmosphere (great bar scene as well).  It's way downtown on the West Side and looks like nothing from the outside.  I recommend the brussels sprouts with chorizo. . .

Blue Ribbon Sushi (Soho) Worth the wait
Four Seasons (Midtown East) On the company expense account
Nicola's Italian (Upper East Side) Great food

Bouley, Nobu and Les Halles

Three days to spend in NYC this weekend and now with an all to long list of menus to check. I hope restaurant screening won't be to complicated
