If you are in RI, Newport and Block Island are very nice beach areas with nice hotels and restaurants.
Also Federal Hill in Providence has great restaurants as well.

If you have time take in a Red Sox game in Boston.

I am in RI and going to Hartford.

I like to take a day or two and go see the sites in a new city.

I did see a Red Sox game in Boston and Harvard, MIT, and the MOS and the Castle Island in Boston.  I loved Boston, had I not moved to Pittsburgh, I would have moved up here!!

I thank you for the hints regarding Rhode Island.  NOW what to do in Hartford?

I would love to hear from others regarding fun spots!

Thank all!!

If you don't mind a bit of a drive - drive up 91 past Springfield and visit Old Deerfield. The area has been restored to what it would have looked like in the very early 1700s. The Village was attacked several times (the Queen Anne's War, the French and Indian War, etc) and at least one of the houses still bears the scars of hatchets and arrows. Fascinating place!

Ok I do agree with the previous recommendations by fellow New Englanders. I have lived and went to college in both RI and Mass and there are some beautiful places there but I'm still biased towards my home state. Take a weekend or better 3-4 days and go for a ride up rt1 in ME. Start in Kittery and head north to ogunquit and take a short walk down the "Marginal Way" to Perkins Cove. Short little walk but goes by many old Victorian homes and ends in the cove where there are great small restaurants. If you got time a walk down ogunquit beach one of the best in New England is always a treat. Longest beach in ME with NO houses on it. Then head up to Kennebunk Port. Some of the oldest Inn's and B&B's in country. Great little roadside food stops too and some great micro brewery's. Then north to Portland where old port eating and shopping is 2nd to none and along with a great art museum and galleries. Keep going and you gotta stop at the famous LL BEAN and high end stops in Freeport. From there heading up north there will be more antique shops and flea markets then you can mention. Towns like Camden, Wiscasset and Rockland should provide more great things to entertain the history buffs. Finally I would end trip with a detor to Mt Desert Island and Bar Harbor. A sunset on Cadilac Mt, a drive around the Loop Rd or a walk around Jordan Pond. Nevermind the many old estates and small towns on the island which show you life as a true old time fishermens life and old world living in coastal New England. That's just the coastal trip and if you look at a map you can see ME is much more then coastal!!!!!! It's a wonderful place to live!!!!!

has an interior which is to die for.  You need to pay a few bucks to get in and view it, but it is well worth it.  While there, check out the interior of the Copley Plaza Hotel right next door.  It's my favorite hotel lobby in Boston.  (The rooms are no great shakes, however.)

Go to Mark Twains house and the old state house in Hartford.  If you have time go to gilettes castle in east haddam.  It's a castle built in 1914 and home of William Gillette, he was an actor who played Sherlock holmes.  Very cool castle.

There are also some amazing mansions of some current and former celebrity residents  off the coast from from Betty Davis' former estate in Cape Elizabeth to a whole row of them including the eerie Manse of Stephen King out in Scarborough near Pine Point not sure if he still owns it. However the ride from that area out past the beaches around rt77 is beautiful and can't be beat. You get a gorgeous mix of farm homes and large vast wealthier estates and of course the beaches. There are some other gorgeous private homes along the back road into Fort William in Cape Elizabeth as well. If you plan it right you can end up at Red's Dairy Freeze after in South Portland famous for putting little candy eyes in it's cones when you ask for sprinkles.
The eyes always make me smile :-)

Welcome Ms Charlotte!
Don't miss the the recently restored interior of the McKim (older) Building of the Boston public library.  Then stroll the Back Bay; the 1st planned urban neighborhood created in the early 19th century by the 1st generation of American born architects & engineers practicing their trade & after studying in the academies in Europe.  Bear in mind - most row houses were once a single family home.  From there it's a lovely stroll through the public gardens toward another architectural gem that is Beacon Hill.
Also, Mystic CT is lovely as is P-Town on the Cape & Nantucket & Martha's Vinyard; you might particularly enjoy the gingerbread cottages in Oaks Bluffs, MV.
Enjoy!
