I think their profits would go up significantly if they master the logistical side of the business.

One of our local providers had her Iphone snatched tonight in Minneapolis by a black male.  Every day there are carjackings, shootings, muggings and assaults.  It is just going to get worse during the summer.
.
Stay safe, my friends.  Avoid these crime areas.

Why? Because someone actually told truth in a thread?
I for one, am sick of whole thing and yeah, you just wait and see.
It will get worse this summer but gawd forbid we call like it is.

I don’t believe in cancel culture.  That should answer your question.

I'm willing to bet that if you get all unhinged and embarrass yourself again, this thread will eventually get canceled like the last MN thread you stuck your nose into.

I grew up in North Minneapolis and went to Mpls North high School. I got bullied, beat up,picked on alot.I learned how to fight, became involved in Martial Arts. The Summer Crime Wave is nothing new ,the same thing happens every year in every major U.S. city. This has been going on since 1967-'68. In 1968 , 500 hundred National Guard were called up for rioting on Plymouth Avenue, ( NOT Civil Unrest, BS Term) because Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in April, and then Robert Kennedy in June. If you think 2020 was the worst year ever, 1968 IS the worst year in U.S. History. Mpls Police Chief Tony Bouza (1980-1988) said that there is no gang problem in Murderapolis. You can throw all the money on gangs, violence, etc. Lying LBJ did that with his Great Society program,it doesn't work. Create jobs, bring back the Armed Forces Draft, get people off their asses and put them to work. The Mayors of Mpls and St. Paul are afraid (with the Governor) of their own shadows, quit trying to appease every one.  The Business Owners on Lake Street, University Avenue and West Broadway are still waiting for relief. While you're at it,open the intersection at 38th and Chicago,so business and the neighborhood can get on with their lives.

When the Governor, Mayor Manchild and the city council of both Mpls and St Paul coddle these fuckers, making it easier and easier to get involved in criminal activity, Just seems to be endless these days, When will one of these guy's grow some ball's and tell it the way it is,
Both in Mpls. and St Paul if a stolen car is spotted and they attempt pull it over and it take's off they can't pursue it. i get it dangerous. but what message does that send.

There are already lots of risks in the hobby. Pre-Covid I had a few lame excuses if I got in an accident or got robbed downtown. Now that crime has gone up and traffic has gone down, I have really no legit reason to be there.

I wish more ladies would advertise their spots in the suburbs.

went on their website yesterday 57 cars stolen in 7 days. went on website a month ago 220 stolen for year not to mention other crimes. their crime map you cannot read if you include all events. yesterday 6 yr old girl died, 3rd kid shot in one week. now a half dozen older black people saying this has to stopped. 200 less police, their hands tied by blm. possible vote on no police force this fall. how come no riots when black kills black or is that acceptable to blm. where's keith ellison, he show up at brooklyn center to protect the rioters. its difficult to hobby right now.

The numbers are bad but I work downtown and hobby in the city and it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

I'm a white guy originally from a city larger than Minneapolis and grew up in a diverse area and I'm not automatically afraid of people who don't look like me. How you all view "crime" and define a "bad area" is on a different standard to where I'm from. This city is quite safe in comparison.

Many of you  "  old timers"   will remember Shinders,  a newspaper store at 6th and Hennepin
many years ago.   I often stopped in to Shinders at 10-11 at night to buy papers. I never had a concern or
fear of being a victim of violence.  Today, downtown Mpls is off limits for me.  Two years ago, I took the
light rail to a Twins game. I parked in a lot  that was not close to downtown.  Returning to my car after the game at about 11:30 pm was a very  uncomfortable experience.  From my perspective,  it is only going to
get worse.

Crime is way down in the last 40 years. We had a small uptick last year that might extend into this year but no need to panic. Also, we are all technically criminals.

Our technically being criminals doesn't protect us from the other kinds of crooks.

I live and work in the Calhoun-Isles neighborhood and I no longer feel safe.  I have never felt this before.  I now have to communicate with my neighbors over the NextDoor app due to houses, garages, and cars getting robbed and rummaged over night after night.

It's that spike though and the continued higher crime rate that is of great concern.

neighbors considering where you live and I feel safe in our neighborhood. Then again, I came from a bigger city with more crime. And communicating with your neighbors? I thought this was Minnesota and "Minnesota Nice". Aren't we supposed to be friendly with our neighbors?

What I will relent on is the city does need more police, they just need to modify how they respond to calls.

IJMiggs210 reads

There are definitely some bad cops such as Chauvin and others but it’s fair to say an overwhelming majority are good and do their job respectfully.  The city of Minneapolis just needs to hire and train more good police officers.  My neighbors(husband, wife, and teenager were biking last week in Minneapolis in a traditionally “safe area” and were assaulted while riding their bikes.  They were thrown off their bicycles, mugged, and robbed of their cell phones and bikes to three grown men who overpowered them.

Yeah, but it is not as bad as Mogadishu, so they should stop crying ... or something like that.

Uptown is over.  I walked through the heart of Uptown today. There is nothing going on at Hennepin and Lake Street.  So many closed restaurants, salons, clothing stores, movie theaters, etc, and so many open retail spaces that will probably never be filled.

Just over a year ago there were billboards everywhere, an Apple Store, Victoria Secret, Gap, and others who have all closed permanently with no plans of ever returning.

-- Modified on 6/17/2021 10:43:02 PM

Providers should be able to negotiate lower rents in all the vacated spaces or have more choices of where to set up shop. Keep hoping more of the top massage providers  go independent and keep more of the donation as the one taking most of the risk and doing the work.

I think their profits would go up significantly if they master the logistical side of the business.

Who wants to go into a crime-fest.  They should move out to the burbs.

My first read through, I was inclined to agree. I took a walk through Uptown this morning (like I do every morning), including Lake and Hennepin, and it's far from over. Have there been major changes in the last year? Totally! But let's call a spade a spade and recognize this post is neglecting other variables that impacted small businesses and big businesses: the pandemic and/or corporate finances/crisis.

There were a plethora of open restaurants, salons, clothing stores, furniture stores, and specialty stores like the book store, etc. Admittedly several of these places closed for a few days during the week this week but it's still a bustling area. Again, while I concur that there are quite a few empty storefronts, specifically around Calhoun Square, as said above, there could be other variables. Take for instance, Victoria's Secret - a business that has been looking grim for years. With a massive brand identity crisis and loss of profits quarter after quarter, they were selectively shutting down stores months before the pandemic to save money and if I recall correctly Uptown's was on the block. The Uptown Theater were not paying on their lease and owed at least 200K when they closed a couple weeks ago. And several of these small businesses could not keep up in the pandemic.

I'm not denying that the events of 2020 probably exacerbated things but we would be remiss not to include the other variables that most likely played a significant factor as well.

IJMiggs156 reads

Calhoun Square is boarded up big time and used to host multiple restaurants and retail stores is the only “mall” in Minnesota that is claiming they are closed due to the pandemic(which is bullshit).  Approximately 70% of their spaces are empty and the ones open have to resort to curbside delivery of their products.  It’s quite sad that the reason they are closed is because they don’t want a bunch of animals looting the hell out of the place due to what happened last year.  The Apple Store, Victoria Secrets, GAP, and others right across the street closed permanently for this reason because it isn’t a safe place to work or operate a profitable business.

We can move a block or more north on Hennepin and it is the same thing.  Juut Salon publicly just announced they are closing because their clients and workers no longer feel safe visiting that location.  Burch Steakhouse and others closed for the same reason.  Look up the news articles if you don’t believe me.

-- Modified on 6/20/2021 2:01:58 AM

You are correct, businesses aren't closed due to china flu.

I’ve been observing Uptown since the ‘80s. The national chains have been departing Uptown for years, well before the pandemic or the street troubles of the last year. At the time the theme was essentially that trying to turn Uptown into Edina North was a failed effort, and that was true long ago. I do think Apple’s departure was more related to the street  troubles than anything else. But the rest were largely doomed well before 2020. And new things will move in. Anne Kim’s new restaurant (taking over the very much missed Lucia space) is a sign of the coming rebirth of a neighborhood that has always made new things to replace the old many times over.

IJMiggs126 reads

I had to Google Anne Kim.  I have been to her pizza restaurant Lola and the now empty Lucia space.  Lola and Lucia’s are tiny little restaurants with only 10 tables.  A tiny little restaurant off the main streets with only 1,500sq feet of seating isn’t going to save uptown.  If she moved into the large Chino Latino space, that would be a different story but still wouldn’t fill all of the other empty spaces on Hennepin and Lake Street.

I’d actually discourage Big Fixes - That was how Uptown got into trouble in the first place.  The neighborhood does better with lots of little fixes (which always has a lot of churn, like small businesses always do, but no one closed business is all that important to the whole). The small restaurant was only offered as an example of that, not as the final solution by itself.

IJMiggs109 reads

A 10 table foodie restaurant that only caters to 30+ year old whites from Minneapolis and Edina with disposable income isn’t the answer.

The crime needs to get under control before anything else.  Then we can talk about “if you build it, they will come” may happen.

if it's truly an increase in crime or are people now just hyper-aware and more likely to call? Frankly, I feel very safe around here during the day and at night.

It's also pertinent to remember that Uptown is one neighborhood in all of the 5th precinct area which has three sectors. Uptown is right on the lines of 5th Precinct Sector 1 and 2. So when I look at the Crime stats for South Minneapolis, I try to do my due diligence to see if the crime was legitimately in Uptown or in a neighboring suburb.

Again, if you tie police presence with "safety", then the 5th Precinct is doing well with patrol as I see patrol around here every few hours if not hourly. Several small businesses, including the ones I frequent, are still up and running on Lake, Hennepin, Lagoon, and Lyndale.

2019 vs 2020
homicides up 70%
gunshot victims up 105%
carjackings up 300%

please don't take offense but just throwing out statistics without context is part of the reason why so many people are so ill-informed.

Comparing 2019 to 2020 doesn't really help your argument because 2020 would (and will most likely be) considered an anomaly of a year by historians for Minneapolis due to a global pandemic and the eye of the racial justice movement landing on our doorstep. Not surprising though given Minneapolis' and St. Paul's history when you really think about it. I digress.

Once again, was there truly an increase in crime OR were more people at home, hyper-aware and more likely to call?

The numbers you should realistically want to compare are going to be 2019 vs. 2021 because things are semi back to normal.

The chart above is murders in Minneapolis from Jan to June for the years up including 2021 which is well above the rest so far.

If I recall, 2019 there were 48 homicides for the entire year in Minneapolis.  2020 had 84.

Through 8/6/21, we are at 51.  August is just starting, will we get to the August 2020 count of 16?  I hope not.

https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/government-data/datasource/crime-statistics-dashboard/

Minneapolis has 20 times the violent crime rate as my suburb.

Where my incall is, it's SAFE. Stop reading those FB crime pages with their skewed statistics, it's no where near how it was in the 70's up to the 90's smh
I haven't had any issues coming and going from my house to work at any time of day or night & I do go downtown ...at night too lol so scary NOT

Any time of night huh, I almost dare you to wander around downtown MPLS along the bus stop routes after midnight by yourself and see how that goes. I could almost add 38th Chicago to that (by the way all the bullet holes in houses in that area are a sight to see.) Anywhere there is a sign that basically says (no whites allowed) is definitely a place I want to be at.

I do every weekend and have for over 10 years, if you can't handle an unhoused person needing a cigarette or some change then don't go there 🤷‍♀️
I live near third precinct also so, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about seeing as I live here and have for decades off n on, uptown was worse in the 90's TBH
( lived in the now gentrified warehouse district in a dilapidated warehouse space, I've lived in worse cities than Minneapolis that's for sure!

One of our local providers was assaulted a month or two ago and had her iphone stolen.

I love Ms. D.  I was so hoping she would respond to the OP.  She's so delusional.  She spouts off statements with no supporting information.  I have this vision of Ms. D. riding her bike so carefree and oblivious while all around her overturned cars are on fire and there is mass chaos.  It also reminds me of the idiotic CNN reporter who said the protests in Kenosha, WI were "mostly peaceful" and then in the background fires raged.  Please keep posting Ms. D.  We need the comic relief.

In addition to needing a vast amount of resources to combat the violence on the Northside, there are four other problem areas in the city that needs to be dealt with.
-18th and Nicollet, which is a drug market  and gang haven
-38th and Chicago (enough said)
-Downtown
-Uptown

I have been avoiding most places in the 3rd for a while. There were some great dives, a lot of RT's and car rides. But Lake is actually the dividing line between two different gangs, especially around Bloomington. I saw a guy run out of the old pool hall, and another guy taps him right in the intersection.

A semi well known lady (who still gets reviews) lived around 18th and nicollet like 5-6 years ago. She moved to Bloomington probably 4 years ago, I always wonder if all this happened when the Lake Lyndale ladies were pretty much the only game in town - how would there business be doing. Anyone saying the uptown is just fine and nothing bad is going on just tells me they are one of the protesters (who have absolutely no lives) out there nightly fighting for Minneapolis's new heroes.
A drug dealer, a gang member who's family is about to pay up because he shot another gang member and paralyzed him, and a guy with a rap sheet 20 pages long who had a shootout with cops. Kids these days have some very interesting heroes.

"Anyone saying the uptown is just fine and nothing bad is going on just tells me they are one of the protesters (who have absolutely no lives) out there nightly fighting for Minneapolis's new heroes."
-----------------

This part in particular is reaching but perception is reality. But, I empathize because all of this probably isn't something the majority of people here are used to so it feels like it's unsafe.

I’m from out of town so I’m not familiar with the various areas. I would greatly appreciate advice from guys who are.
I’m considering a visit just west of Lyndal on Lake. Will an afternoon visit in that area be safe

Uptown (west of Lyndale on Lake) during the day is super safe. There's a lot of traffic in the area so you'll be fine.

I'm not affiliated with the protests but I am a freelance photojournalist and what I can tell you is that Lake Street hasn't been shut down since Thursday. There is a small group that holds a vigil on Lake and Girard but I haven't seen anything like I did earlier in the week. The last few evenings, MPD has made themselves known. For the last several weeks (before the activity in the area), MPD blocks off Hennepin, Lagoon, and Lake on Fridays and Saturdays due to the amount of clubs, bars, and restaurants there and just the vast number of people. It's super diverse on those evenings.

If you have questions, I'm game to answer.

I remember when MPLS was a beautiful city (The City of Lakes). Uptown was considered an inner city Edina, very upscale. Not anymore. When you have the "Activist's" shut down I-94, 38th & Chicago & now Hennepin and Girard Ave.S. because they are not happy with what is going on with the police. The Mpls Mayor and City Council (and MN Governor) need to shoulder responsibility for the destruction and crime, arson and looting. I am all for peaceful protest and the First Amendment. But, these assholes are not peaceful. When you destroy a Police Station, two Post Office Buildings, and Businesses, that is NOT peaceful. Let's call it what is is: They are Anarchists. MPLS is being destroyed before our eyes, and it will become another Chicago or Detroit, real shitholes! IT is so sad and distressing!

I duno maybe stopping the police from murdering its black community members, in front of might I add, might be the response here.

People are quick to blame but are to dense to understand that people are upset. They are not being heard, and continually being told that’s not the appropriate way to protest, and are witnessing their fellow community members being murdered before their eyes.

Ask your self, if your neighbors, friends, family are REPEATEDLY being murdered in front of your eyes, what the fuck would you do? One police station being burned is nothing. Lives are literally at stake, but because they are black they don’t matter, am I right?

what is the "right" kind of protest. Protesting is imbedded in the fabric of America. It's literally in our country's DNA. Did we forget the Boston Tea Party?

What I find so intriguing is that we laud MLK as the mover and shaker of the Civil Rights Movement. He is universally admired. However, his methods were highly controversial for the 60s. If you look at articles from the 60's, one poll from 1961 indicated that 57 percent of Americans thought the Freedom Riders and sit-ins at lunch counters were harming the integration movement. In 1963, nearly 74% of Americans believed mass demonstrations were harmful to the cause after his "I have a Dream" speech. People fail to realize how intelligent MLK was about protesting though, especially with Selma. This man knew if he could get the violence on camera, then the white moderate could not longer stay comfortably in the middle. I digress.

In in a September 1967 interview, King said, “I think that we’ve got to see that a riot is the language of the unheard." He expanded upon that the following year. He said, "I think America must see that riots do not develop out of thin air. Certain conditions continue to exist in our society which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots. But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality, and humanity. And so in a real sense our nation’s summers of riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again. Social justice and progress are the absolute guarantors of riot prevention." Kind did not support violent tactics like riots, but he knew that acknowledging and fixing the conditions that they are rioting against would solve the problem.

Suffice to say, I often wonder what is the "right way" to protest?

Well we know kneeling during the national anthem is not the correct way./s

In all seriousness, I think there are many ‘right way’ to protests. As long as you bring awareness to the issue than you’ve succeeded. Now the real question is how you connect that awareness to actual change is the crucial link.

I never said that Black Lives don't matter,in fact NO ONE said that. I believe that ALL LIVES MATTER! Black,Brown, White,Red,Yellow. Please don't tell that I don't know what the fuck is going on. I am tired of all the Generalizing BULLSHIT! Like I said before, I grew up in North Minneapolis,MN 1/2 Block from Plymouth Ave. N. I also served in the US Navy, Air National Guard and the MN National Guard. I retired after serving  Honorably for 20 years,so,yes I DO know what the fuck is going on! Before you judge me,walk a mile in my shoes! I remember when 500 National Guard were called up in 1967-'68 on Plymouth Ave. There were also riots in Newark,Detroit,Watts and many other U.S. Cities then.I also did not say that all protestor's are bad, just like not all Police Officers are bad,and not all white people are racists. Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr preached and practiced non-violence. MLK had to get a permit to protest peacefully, and he was arrested several times. Violence begets violence. When people burn, rob, loot, destroy, torch Businesses, Stores,Restaurants, Liquor Stores, Tire stores,Federal Buildings,a Police Station, etc, etc. I guess it's not a big deal to destroy people's lives, savings, dreams and hope, because they are fucking angry! Change the System then, instead of burning it down.  Arson, robberies, looting are felonies and arson alone in some states is punishable by up to 20 years.  Not in MN though, you might serve 36 months. It is a sad day when Anarchist's are hiding behind peaceful protestors. We can't or won't prosecute these pricks though, because we might hurt their feelings. Fuck that!  We need Police and Law Enforcement. Without that, there will anarchy and lawlessness. Yes, what happened to George Floyd ,Dante Wright, Philando Castile and many, many other young Black Men is tragic and disturbing. So is the Destruction and Decimation of the Native American race, and the hundreds of tribes that were destroyed, their sacred land taken away and then put them on Reservations. WHERE the fuck is the anger there? We need to re-train our Police Officers. Or let's defund and dismantle the MPLS Police Department and do whatever the fuck we want to.

You ranting about serving in the military for 20 years is relevant to the topic how? You need to sit the fuck down, SHUT THE FUCK UP and LISTEN. People that spout the all lives matter bullshit do not get the point. White lives already matter, they are not being targeted by the gang in blue that’s supposedly there to help them. Guess which group is continuously are being murdered by the militarized gang?

Stop killing the black community. FULL FUCKING STOP. This is the topic. This is the discussion that needs to be had. STOP distracting from it. Fucking ACKNOWLEDGE the goddamn problem. The police is not the judge and jury, but they certainly are the god damn executioner. There is a rule of law, commit a crime, you and I get our day in court. Not George, Dante, or numerous other blacks.

You bitch about how if we don’t like change it, and than when the leaders in charge purpose changes you bitch about said leaders being a man child, or caving into anarchist.

You talk about walking in your privileged shoes. Have you consider walking in their shoes (metaphorically because they didn’t have shoes because they couldn’t own them because they were slaves)? Were your ancestors forced from their homelands onto boats in chains? Were they forced to work from sunrise to sunset, earning nothing for decades? Were your ancestors forced to fuck and produce offsprings like god damn cattle? Were your ancestors barred from owning land, property, and money? Decades they were held down while YOUR ancestors got ahead. When finally things start to “change” the more they remained the same. Treated like 5th classes citizens here in the states, segregation in every part of life, enlist them to be landmine scapegoats in wars they had no reason to be in fighting for a country who treats them like ANIMALS. And you want to talk about destruction of property. Fucking joke.

Honestly I don’t know why I even brother. You are not going to understand any of the points. You won’t take the time to actual read and comprehend what I wrote.  Your post not only lacks coherent structure, it lacks any sense of logic.  An immigrant, and yes I’m speaking about myself here, can articulate points better than you. You lack the critical thinking skill needed to grasp such concepts. Trying to use Native Americans, who were also wronged, as a distraction from the topic at hand. Two wrongs don’t make a right bud.

Think about that, or don’t. I honestly don’t have any hope you can understand.

It’s called fighting back.  Fuckwit.  Wear their skin color for a week and see how you feel after being oppressed and threatened by cops

Been around Mpls many years, in July 67 much of Plymouth ave was torched when riots broke out. Many residents moved out to the suburbs and never looked back. I imagine its happening on the south now. But guess what people came back and new nieghborhoods were built. Crime in Mpls has pockets in every section, some areas worse than others. Prostitution, robbery ,drug busts all seam to run hand in hand yet continuously moves around. My advice is to be aware of your surrounding, pay attention to start with where you park.It might pay for you recon the area, to see whats hanging around.I feel in Mpls you dont stick out like John as much as in small towns and some suburbs, and Mpls cops have better things to do other than setting up stings. Anyway its gonna be a hot dangerous summer all over the US.

I dont think any stats or charts will sway my feelings.  No downtown or uptown or north side for me.  No more minneapolis for the time being.  Sad about that because missing the sports and shows and restaurants but just not worth the risk to me.  Maybe next year.

Have been in Uptown but only in morning early afternoon hours and felt safe.
Think that the Minneapolis City Council can fix the safety problem easily by sending in their new staff of “social workers” to fix the issues . These criminals just need to be understood. 🤮m

If anything to properly reform the police will require increased funding to do it right.

Greek festival in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis has been canceled because of recent unrest in the district, sponsors said Friday.

Read on the NextDoor app that the Uptown community is looking to work with the media. It seems that the crime is happening around Uptown but not in Uptown proper. Recently biked through the area and did a nighttime run and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Rather quiet and quaint.
