When I got my prepaid phone at a Wal-mart Voice Stream, they asked for my name, address and phone number, but they didn't ask to see an id.  If you give the information as comfortably as you would your own information, they don't question it.

Has anyone else run into this little trick used by LE?
What they do is apparently they get the phone of a "provider"
and look up the calls.  Then they call and accuse you of associating with a known prostitute.  I had this happen the St. Paul police called me and I checked it out, it was really them.  Anyway I basically told the officer to pound sand as I hadn't done anything illegal.  He said he could find out my name from my  cell phone number( he can't because I have a totally untracable cell#) anyway I told him to have at it and hung up.  Haven't heard since.

How does one go about getting an untracable cell #? And, how do you know that it is untracable?

go to Target, get an prepaid phone, pay chash -  voila !

The prepaids will work but you will need to pay cash no plastic as they record the number.  Also, you will need to use a valid name address and phone number in order to activate the phone.  Don't use your own!  A better way is to purchase the prepaid from someone else who has already activated it (look on ebay or classifieds) then you just continue to buy prepaid cards as needed and your phone is untraceable!

The LE are not able to charge you with any crime but they like to hassle the "hobbiests" by calling your wife or significant other and discussing your acquaintances. Watch your regular cell phone number as LE can get your name and other information about you if they have the number.  Actually anyone can get the owners name and billing address by knowing your cell phone number. It just costs about $35.00. Be careful out there!!

Keep in mind that LE does use the same trick(s)
to call providers using prepaid systems.
These calls are not blocked normally. They ring
through and someone may answer. However, if the
party called has unidentified-call service
where unidentified calls are not taken then the
prepaid wireless and LD calling cards will not work.

A solution is to subscribe to an obscure
local telcom like Ovation. It is more
inconvenient and time consuming for LE
to get information a small telco
than calling Qwest Security for call
log info. Remember the crime is only a
Misdemeanor.

However better yet, subscribe to a VoIP
service like Vonage. It will take years for
the LE Luddites to figure out VoIP.

Get a virtual phone #. For example, A provider
can get a Vonage-London Virtual # and all suscribers
using Vonage can call the provider via
London (virtually) for 2 cents a minute!!

BTW, Vonage call routing is not local. Thus LE is
less likely to pursue any calling info on a Misdemeanor.
