I don't think it's about blackmail, in the obvious sense... I think it is simply that a married guy is going to hand over the money and leave quietly. A single guy may fight back. He might be a concealed carrier. He might take legal action. A married guy can't explain the consequences of any of those actions to his SO, so he backs down and leaves quietly.
