No idea how it is for camping as I just make it a day trip, but it's my favorite hiking spot.

The section between Split Rock & Tettegouche is my personal fave. Very challenging hike in some spots though!

e Royale backpacking.  Many beautiful trails.   Easy to difficult.   Take ferry out Grand portage mn.  Early and late in the year are best times for hiking. Cooler, no bugs, far less hikers. MUST be prepared for weather,  some routes are long

Sage creek badlands.  Drive to it.  Free camping. Buffalo hanging out there.   Pretty country. Just south of Wall SD.

          Have fun.

This park is amazing. This park also has camper cabins and if you get Cabin B the views are amazing.

It depends on when in August bike week 8th till 14th it's tough to get any campsites then and if you do it's none stop noise and partying hotel rooms are all booked by now it's a fun week if your looking for that type atmosphere .

I was looking into the sage creek campground-  how likely do you suspect it would be that i would lose out on a spot if I did not show up right in the morning?
Isle Royale is next on my list- I am thinking of going in mid-September.  I need to get new gear!

In the Badlands Nat park. So you do need a national park permit which allows you to drive to all the overlooks and hiking location. Most are short hikes. Lots of birds, buffalo, big horn sheep.   They say sage creek campgrounds almost never fills up.  Big drive around circle with picnic tables and toilets.  Could put a lot of vehicles and tents in the area.  Would say no problem arriving later in the day.  Was there this late March.  Must have been 15 Buffalo grazing near by and in the middle of the circle.  They are used to people.  Don't mess with them, and they won't mess with you.  I like hiking there.
