The Appelman Law Firm is pretty well known for defending prostitution cases in the Twin Cities. Here's a link to a page on their web site that discusses "Prostitution Myths."  It's useful info and probably about as authoritative as you will find, though rather unsettling to read. Destroys a couple of cherished beliefs I've been clinging to, anyway.

Lots of useful info there that it is good to read again every so often and serves as  good reminder why if you ever has the misfortune to encounter LE your response should be to insist on your lawyer and then refuse to answer any questions.
