It is much more common than you may think, companies often pay up to avoid the spotlight and to not tell the police they were the victim of a security hack.  If they do, customers will seek out other 'safer' companies to handle their business when in reality the 'safer' companies have a stricter internal privacy policy against reporting they were victims of ransom ware / hacks
