Am I alone on this? I rarely find myself in a situation where texting is convenient, safe, and enjoyable. Maybe it's because I carry a little phone because I travel and keep all my "stuff" to a minimum.

It never fails that I receive a text while I'm driving, and it drives me crazy, especially when the text is asking for something in the context of a normal conversation.

Unless the circumstances are unusual, I don't like to carry on conversations of any length that way.

There is no law that says the recipient of a text message needs to reply right away.  In fact, the law states you CANNOT engage in texting while driving a vehicle.  How did we reach the point where an immediate response is expected?  That isn't true for other forms of communication.  Respond to the text when it is safe and convenient.

It's not usually convenient unless you happen to be sitting somewhere not doing anything.
Although it can be a little more private than carrying on a conversation.
But never when driving, right?  It scares me when I see someone driving next to me
with their head down playing with their phone.

At least I interpreted it to mean he got a text that is something better handled as a conversation and she should have called rather than texting.

How else can you talk to your mistress while at home if you are married? And you are in a meeting at work and you are trying to arrange a nooner?

....call (if you have my number then i've screened you and know who you are when calling) or email. I'm a text at minimum type of person also.

Especially if the other person is in contact with a few people. They receive your text half an hour later and the cohesion is lost.

Unless you have a keyboard pad it's click - triple click - double click - triple click - YUCK!

connecting with dates as well as family. Way better than voicemail, and many of my contacts prefer it, so I find it much easier to go with the flow than to paddle upriver.

Any particular reason you don't text on your hobby phone...or is it just because your phone doesn't have that capability?  I can text on mine and it just uses up a little of the prepaid time.

I text - but if it's a "conversation," I can't begin to keep up. I'm so slow, and it's so interruptive, that I have to stop what I'm doing.

When it's not a conversation, though, texting is great and is often the very best way to communicate.

Fortunately, I'm upgrading to 21st Century technology shortly (after years and years of deprivation).

For setting up dates, yes. Long conversations, no, I don't like it. I would much rather talk to the person than text them. I've gotten into a few arguments with people, when they took my texts the wrong way. Voice inflection on the phone can say  a lot. Thats why I would rather talk to the person. Some people text way too much also, IMHO.

It didn't support it, it wasn't a choice I was making. I just tossed it last week, so it's time for a new one anyway.

I like it because it distills conversation down to a minimum. For instance, i don't need to get into a whole bunch of chit chat to make sure we are still on track for time EX:
phone call:Me>Hello?
                them>Oh hey can you hold on a sec? (clicks other line)wait wait wait (clicks back) Hey,god that was annoying, this blah blah blah............

now Text:Me>we on schedule?
       them >yes

my only pet text peves are if you ask two questions and the answer only one AND not always understanding each others sarcasm.
