I don't pay attention to the "top listings" as I know they're basically paid ads.  Instead I read the ad boards, create my own favorites lists, and watch for new provider listings.  For me it's an efficient approach and I can easily update my preferences.

And the top listing was more about performance. I guess that's good to know.

Top 10 placement means the provider paid for a spot to be listed in the first 10 ads you see ... The rest are in order of who logged in last so you know who is online or was just online ... This also keeps the providers who log on often near the top and the ones who rarely at the bottom.  

Featured ad is another provider paid advertisement ... These alternate the providers who paid for them and are located at the very top of the 1st page of ads ... Just another way of being seen as often as possible. Some providers have both featured ad and top 10, some have one, and others choose to do neither.
