...or the iPhone equivilent? I never have my GPS turned on anyway on my Android. You can't turn off the emergency 911 locator on any phone, as I understand.

Freaked out to see a map on my phone of my travels.

GPS isn't the only tool that tracks your location, so you need to look at how to turn off ALL location services on your phone.  Android can also use wifi hotspots and cell towers to ping your location. I found this out when I looked at my location map and saw a history of all my business and personal travel that was spot on accurate.  Even when GPS and cellular data were both turned off when I was out of the country, Google knew i was there and where I went.  That's how the Man (can't use names) who is accused of killing his son and dumping him in the river was tied to the exact location where the body was ultimately found.

just put your iphone on airplane mode, but the downside is you won't be able to gps. turn off "find my iphone" and turn it back on when you're back at home or at the office.
