That is my best advise.  When I 1st started traveling up people gave me the in's and out's on where to stay ect.  However, after many trips to the cities I have stayed from downtown to Maple Grove to St. Louis Park to Mendota Heights... In my opinion downtown sucks.  All the one way streets, you have to pay for parking and internet but you can get around on the skyway system so never have to go out.  So for people who work downtown I suppose downtown is great, for everybody else not so much.  When I stay more than a day or two I like to split my days up on the different sides of the city.  Everybody has always been very nice and helpful up there...

I'm not an expert on Minnesota but I know you will need a good coat!

Uptown is an unofficial neighborhood with an earned reputation for trouble. It's also known as an eclectic, fun, culturally rich place to live and hang out.

The problem is that local knowledge is critical, because just like downtown San Diego, sometimes as little as one block off the "path" can place you where you may not want to be.

That would be my advice.
