I have been visiting TJ for 8.5 years without serious problems, but this morning at 11 am I was attacked from behind by two men, in broad daylight with lots of witnesses nearby.  They made me unconscious with a stranglehold, stole my watch and wallet, and broke my sunglasses.  When I regained consciousness, two witnesses told me that the police had already caught one of the thieves, right around the corner.  The police were great, recovering my wallet with nothing missing.  I did have to waste about two hours with the police and a judge, but came home with minor bumps and scrapes and a sore neck.  It could have been much worse.  Take precautions--maybe use a money belt, don't wear a watch, go with a friend, any protection you can invent.  Best wishes to all.

Romantic... Wow! Sorry to hear about this incident but happy to know you are okay and the cops got at least one of the pricks! Can you tell us where you were when this happened?

take care,

I'm glad to hear you are OK.  Sorry to hear about your experience.  How terrible.  Be sure to let us know how and where it happened.  Also, a description, if possible, of the guys who attacked you so we know who to avoid.

Glad to hear that you're physically ok. I don't have the years under my belt, but I tend to go there over-confident; I speak the language a bit. But to get mugged in broad daylight is a shocker. I hate to be too analytical, but do you mind giving us a complete report of the events prior to your ordeal? I'm guessing that you spent the night and just checked out of a hotel?

Glad you are ok!!!!

Bro tell us what part of town this is in!  Police are doing a better job in the Red Zone district as the clubs are becoming under more scrutiny!

Thanks for the messages of concern from fellow hobbyists.  To answer your questions: the attack happened on the sidewalk by the side of El Eden in Zona Norte at the corner of Constitucion and Articulo 123 (aka Calle 1) as I was just arriving in TJ.  Some witnesses were discussing that perhaps the criminals hide in a doorway and jump out behind pedestrians.  The police and the apprehended criminal say that the man who attacked me was wearing black, but I never saw him.  The apprehended criminal (the one who stole the wallet) is about age 20, 5'8", 145#, wearing a plain white, sleeveless t-shirt, baggy blue jeans, and sporting two large tatoos of eagles' wings on his upper chest.  He is a light-skinned Mexican with black, buzz-cut hair, and a long, narrow face.  Hope this helps.  I returned today without my watch showing, without a wallet, looking for any sign of them, but I didn't see them.  The police told me they would watch for them and continually drive them out of the area.

Thank's for the update, stories like this keep me a little sharper!

Sure am glad you survived that experience. Are you ever going down to TJ again?

I returned two days later with more caution, no watch, no wallet, and no problem.
