Taking some family to lunch next week. It's probably better to stay on the highway for now...
Does anyone know what exit to take?

It's quite a ways South of Puerto Nuevo Jamie. I strongly urge you to take the drive and see it for yourself.  We'll see if someone comes up with the exit before I go. If not, I'll try to remember to post it here. Great food, great view. I'm probably making a mistake by even mentioning it! Part of it's charm is that a lot of people on this side of the border have never heard of it. I hope I haven't blown it...LOL

Sorry, I was thinking of a great place in Roasrito, I think it's the same name.

Here's the Directions to La Fonda, with a map - off their site - hope I can redeem myself.

Adios amigo...
TS Jamie

Take the Interstate 5 freeway south through San Diego to the Mexican border at San Ysidro.

After crossing the border, immediately follow signs to the right for Rosarito and Ensenada Cuota.

Continue following Rosarito/Ensenada signs and you will soon be on the Ensenada Toll Road.

There will be two toll booths to go through before reaching the exit for La Fonda.

It is approximately a 45 minute drive from Tijuana to La Fonda.

You will exit the toll road at the La Mision exit and go left.

La Fonda is less than a quarter of a mile down on the right hand side (Kilometro 59.5), with good signage.

Park, come inside and welcome home!

For some reason, I was thinking of the place on the southern part of Rosarito I believe,,that's circular shape and looks over the ocean from the cliffs.  Glad I didn't try to give directions then.  Not that I would have remember the exit from,,well let's just say a few years ago.

I'm thinking its around the 50k marker(50kilometers from the border). On the toll road it's pretty easy to see where to get off.  Big sign says "La Fonda."  You really can't miss it.  Toll road is beautiful by the way.

I usually drive south of Ensenada to the Bufadora, that's a real pretty drive too.

I think the place you are thinking of is that condo complex they built out on that point below the Fox studios.  We almost bought a place there, fabulous views, then discovered they built the building on unstable ground and the whole thing is eventually going to fall into the ocean.  (sigh}

This just came to mind - we should organize a TER weekend - get all the boys and girls (and the boygirl... :-) to come down and have like a convention in Rosarito or Ensenada.  No LE trouble (at least none that money can't buy) good food and company for everyone!  (giggle)

Best,
TS Jamie

You owe us a trip report! :)  Was the food as amazing as I remember?

On the upside, the food was GREAT! My 'bro-in-law and I both had steak and lobster. The lobster was sweet and you could cut the steak with your fork. My wife had a dish similar to the Costa Azul at LaCosta's. She said it melted in her mouth. My sister-in-law, who is a native of Detroit, had...get this...fish`n`chips. While she did say that it was outstanding, my brother-in-law did comment that she flew 2000 miles and drove an hour plus for Long John Silvers! The downside is that the place is changing. While the addition of clear partitions that face out towards the ocean shields diners from the occasional seasonal cold winds, I prefer the feel and taste of the ocean air. Additionally, you can tell that their popularity is rising. Great for LaFondas...bad for those of us that still remember driving down the coast on a late spring day to Puerta Nuevo for lunch and getting a large lobster, tortillas, goat cheese, rice and a Pacifico for less than six bucks. And we ALL know how the Lobster Village turned out. If there's any more evidence in which way they're headed, they added huge Papas grass coverings over each of the dining areas as well as they were breaking up the flagstone floor in the furthest area for...(gulp)...a dance floor.
It still has a magnificent view and outstanding dining, but I fear the worst. Oh well...only time will tell.

Less than 6 bucks for lobster...damn! The only thing in Chicago for less than 6 bucks is McDonalds or White Castle.   lol

Well, from what I remember even White Castle was a lot less 25 years ago! LOL!! Didn't they go for something like $.25 each back then? Hmmm...Maybe that was 30 years ago in Daytona Beach during spring break. Hard to say. I was pretty much drunk or stoned from the minute I got off and on the plane........

I think you're right...I seem to recall them being around 25 cents a slider back then. Of course, I always staggered into those places drunk and/or stoned myself...so maybe we share a delusion! Ahhh...the good old days
