I'll be staying by the airport and I am curious about see a provider in TJ. How does it work? I have a rental car. Do I park near the border and walk across? What do I do once I get there? Are the providers nearby or will someone from a service or CL meet me? Where do we go? Is it clean, safe? How long will the whole process (travel, getting a room, etc) take if I do a one hour appointment? I am staying with colleagues so would need to sneak away to do this. Is it worth doing or should I find a SD indy? Seems like it would be a bit of an adventure but I have concerns. Thanks.

I think you received some very good advice from Rockhard. I'll add my $0.02 worth.
Tijuana Escorts are probably the closest thing for a sure bet GFE. As he said, the meet you at the border, take you to a nice hotel, and provided a great service. They also charge more than bar girls.
GFE sessions are hit and miss with bar girls. (Especially in major bars, like AB and CC.) As stated, Adelitas and (at night) Chicago Club are good places for those new to the Zona.
I'll add to Rochard's advice:
--Take lots of $1.00 and $5.00 bills if headed to the Zona as getting change is hard.
--Don't walk back to the border after dark or if you've had a few too many to drink.--While street girls are the least expensive option, I recommend avoiding them. Sessions with them are very short and lackluster.
--From downtown, you can take the trolley to get to the border. (And, as stated, don't drive a rental car into Mexico if it violates the contract--which is almost always the case.)
To answer more of your questions:
Yes, it's safe. The girls are as clean--probably more clean--than "working girls" are in the states. (Thanks to less drug usage and health cards.)
Is it worth doing. Depends on what you want. If you're after a GFE than it's your best option.
For a one hour session with an escort, I'd allow an additional hour for meeting and greetings, travel to and from the hotel, etc. Plus many chicas aren't clock watchers, so the session may go a little overtime. (Some chicas--like those I've seen from Team Juanita--are very punctial whereas others are sometimes 5-10 mintues late.)
If you have concerns then I advise a daytime trip to TJ. Actually, it's probaby the best time for anybodys first trip as you get to see more int he daylight as well as feeling safer.

If you're in San Diego you must go to Tijuana and I'm willing to bet after you go once you'll figure out how to go twice or maybe 3 times. The advice here is great and I tend to find that late afternoon, early evening, happy hour is a great time to venture to Adelitas and Chicago Club. Also you can park on the right hand side just before the border and take a bus in or walk over and take a cab. There for awhile there was a problem with the Yellow cab but I'm not sure it that is still the case. Have Fun! Wish I was there!
I love TJ and Adelita's always seems to have hotties, and if not just hang out and have a beer in 1/2 hr you wont believe the choices... I hobbied in SD/LA for years before discovering TJ and wow...I ve had some 9+ blonde women down there..that would be $1000 an hr in LA or Vegas... and in TJ they are MUCH MUCH friendlier and for $50-$70 Anyone visiting SD must go. Just walk across border, take cab to adelitas and send my thank you emails later. Also from the stats Ive read TJ girls MUST carry health cards and have monthly STD tests, only 3 cases of Chlamydia this year in 2006 and its AuGUST.
