In Northeast USA.  Is it a felony?  Is jail time usually given?  Does the hobbyist become unemployable?  Can he be places on sex offenders register?

The answers are:  no,no,no and no.

On the other hand, laws vary state to state even in the northeast.

You also have to know that there are various levels of offense pertaining often to the same activity depending upon whether LE wants to make an example of you.

For example, seeing an escort might be a misdemeanor, but if you arranged for her to cross a state line, that becomes a felony  (The improperly named so called Man Act.)

Now relax.

You can avoid LE if you simply stick to well reviewed providers and practice a modium of discretion.

here's a summary of the laws and penalties, both federal and state.

As you can see, in most cases it is a fairly low-grade misdemeanor for the first offense, but can escalate to a felony.

Jail time? Not likely for the first offense.  Even if you were given the maximum fine, and sentenced minimum jail time, the county or state would losing money between the cost of your trial and incarceration.  The prosecutors know this, and they have to answer to the bean counters.  Some jurisdictions even have a "Dignity" course available as alternate punishment, like taking a safe-driving course to get keep the points off your license.  http://www.kpho.com/news/17313384/detail.html#-

Unemployable - no, BUT!!!  Employment applications usually ask if you have any CRIMINAL convictions.  Even if it was only a misdemeanor, or you were given only a fine, or you were given some sort of alternative penalty, if you go to court and admit guilt, or are found guilty, you have a criminal conviction.  So if you answer the application truthfully, you face some awkward questions.  Lie, and they do a background check, it can happen, and you are screwed!

Sex offender registry - no!

Thanks,jazz32 the link to ProCon.Org is great!

enough to factor into your decisions, so I bring it up.  Be very careful with the young providers from small or unestablished agencies, particularly those that advertise on CL and Backpage or girls who advertise directly on those venues (usually being pimped out).  If the girl is underage and you are caught with her, the nature of the transaction won't matter one bit as to the felonious charges to ensue or the sex offender registration issue.  You will be crucified.

Granted, the chances are remote that you will 1) hook up with an underage provider in the first place, and 2) get caught with her if you do hook up with her, but it is possible and has happened.  The visual difference between 16 and 18 is not very much for a lot of girls, so you cannot rely on your sight to distinguish.  The simple way to avoid is to stay away from the real young ones advertising that they are 18-20 unless from a reputable agency.

Good luck
