"I have a 'friend' :-) who is a bit paranoid about getting in hot water. Getting a misdemeanor would not be the worst thing; he just does not want to become 'public.' Anyways, he takes the following precautions as he wants to reduce his odds of getting busted from 0.1% to something like 0.0001%:

- He only sees well-reviewed providers
- He only does out-call to hotels / motels (ones that are inexpensive but not at the bottom, i.e. Motel 6, etc.)
- He only sees independent providers, who, unlike agencies, are smaller fish who are less likely to get busted and less likely to keep my info
- He has a preference for women with their own web sites and/or ones on sites that cost money to advertise on (i.e. Eros)
- He has a preference for women who show their face, especially nudity in the listing
- He Google's the name and # of the provider
- He researches local cities that have not had a lot of busts & avoids them along with researching local cities that post  names/photos of 'johns,' avoiding them as well
- He has an anonymous hobby phone (without built in GPS)
- He has a throwaway e-mail
- When possible he sets up an appointment a few days in advance (stings are usually just during one day in which a fake ad is posted)
- He parks his car away from my hotel (like in a mall parking lot) with the keys to the car hidden under the car wheel well (he does this because if a 'john' gets busted his vehicle can be impounded and sold with the proceeds going to enforcement) & then he walks to the hotel

And he knows to STFU if trouble happens. Note if one does get busted this state in a hotel it is considered a gross misdemeanor since it is considered a public place. However his Google searching has shown that it is pretty much all the charges are for a regular misdemeanor.

Potential issues that could cause problems:
- Hotel check-in requires ID
- Provider could get in trouble with LE and reveal place & time of appointment, hotel could be contacted and embarrassment could ensue
- It does not seem likely that LE would send a woman alone in a hotel room to get a dude in trouble (but might happen).

He is paranoid, but any suggestions/tips as to how my friend can reduce his potential issues that could cause problems or any other issues that could lead to problems would be appreciated. Thanks!

P.S., for anyone looking to leave the States for fun, Toronto is a good bet. My friend even does in-calls there."

It seems to me that people are still searching for the ultimate answer of how to avoid getting arrested.  No one wants this to happen but the possibility is always there.  First of all there is no one answer or resolution to prevent it from happening.   You can only keep doing whatever works for you and still keep your eyes open for anything suspicious that doesn't feel right, because eventually everyone's luck will run out.    It's a cat and mouse game, it's a gamble for providers and patrons and you can never trust anyone even if you see this person for years, never to comfortable.  The game shifts all the time so people have to learn to shift with it, with each person you see each set of circumstances will be different.  Police analyze strategies.  I have no doubt they sit around just talking and thinking and sharing information, but the only main clue you can count on about police is they always give them self away.

How do they do this?  Some are smarter and more patient than others but they have a behavior about them that tends to be anxious especially if a young cop is working the situation.  They speak out loud or say unnecessary comments a demeanor that appears un natural.  You can sense it.  It's really a matter of experience with people and as I said it will always shift it will never be the same.  Keep in mind some cops enjoy this because their a man first before anything else.

So just keep doing what your doing and sometimes change your own strategy according to those you know are getting busted.  As for providers I strongly feel you need to demand deposits or run a CC there are ways of being discreet and appearing as if you have a legit business.  I haven't heard of any cop who will use a CC to see a working girl but I could be wrong.

It helps to do a Google search for reviewers' names; for instance, run a search for: [username ] erotic review. It seems unlikely that LE would bother creating user names, being active on the boards, and writing multiple reviews, so just something else worth mentioning.

The estimate of reducing the odds of getting busted down to 0.0001% was of course an exaggeration, as that would be a million to 1, but it was there to make a point. Oh and also Tineye....

So you think Indy's are safer? Not really, esp if you have a decent job or family or is well known. They can threaten you for money, esp in this HARD economic times. IT will be even worse after us getting downgraded from AAA to AA+

In my opinion a "list" is the quite often a crutch.  I've broken just about every rule on the posted list and never been in trouble with LE.  Stick with well reviewed or verifiable ladies and don't do anything out of desperation.

Seeing only well-reviewed providers and knowing to STFU are the best ways to stay safe. Most of the rest of your precautions are negligible or overkill. IMO being patient, keeping your wits about you, and learning from your experiences count for more than any checklist of supposed panaceas.

Yes, I think indies are "safer" than agencies. I read the article & don't understand why the guy in question is facing 3 felony counts for patronizing, which I thought was a misdemeanor. He was arrested previously on unrelated misdemeanor charges; perhaps that had sometime to do with it?

Your right the reviewers name does help but if I may add as for police they are very active on escort forums and create fake profiles pretending to be escorts and patrons sometimes they even steal others user names.  Trust me I know I have experienced it.  They even set up and use legit business's to show the girl they are the owner or manager or just an employee.  They even have the ability to obtain airline tickets.  People and business companies will comply with the police they are afraid if they don't.  As for reviews I don't agree they would personally write them I don't know how it looks to a judge and jury but if they write reviews it appears to me as if their an accomplice.

- He only sees well-reviewed providers
If Councilman Irving had followed the precaution of only seeing well-reviewed providers he wouldn't be in his current troubles.  It was well known on a local board that the provider mentioned in the story linked above was trouble and had been previously busted.  While TER is a wealth of information its always best to check the provider out on local boards as well especially in areas that TER doesn't really cover such as central Illinois.

In Illinois the law has been changed to make "patronizing" a prostitute a felony.  It was part of the whole "End Demand" bs that is being pushed.  There was quite a bit of discussion about it on the Chicago board.  Solicitation is still a misdemeanor though it has been increased to a Class A if I remember right but patronizing is a felony.

I do think independents are safer.  Actually in my other post I forgot to mention that the girl in the linked article really wasn't an independent anyways.  She is a pimped girl, one of several girls her pimp runs in the Springfield and Peoria area.

Maybe he was too close to a school?

The misdemeanor becomes a felony if the incident occurs within 100-500ft (not sure which) of a school.

Three counts maybe for 3 instances?

Also, I think that there is a good chance that he didn't find her through the internet channels we use. He may have met her while he was out and about... maybe at a bar? Or maybe through a dating site?

It happened before and it could very well be the case in this situation... you just never know~

I think in general an independent sex worker is more private and less prone to create agency list problems that go public, as far as blackmail, there are rotten apples everywhere but not as many as you might think. If a client maintains his privacy, does not divulge his identity he has little to fear, at least until he knows the personality of his chosen paid sex partner. Most sex workers just want to get paid for their services and are not felons. How many times will an escort forgo lipstick and perfume so his/her client will not be obvious to his wife as one who has just had sex, not to mention a helpful hand that zips the fly before the client leaves for home or tactfully advises  Mr. Johnson that he has put his underwear on inside out. God bless them all!
