Warning to motorists heading to California via Interstate 15 today: Better leave early in the morning, or wait until after 2 p.m.

The California Transportation Department is closing the southbound lanes at the state’s border with Nevada from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accommodate the blasting and removal of rock in Mountain Pass, just south of Primm. Inclement weather won’t prohibit blasting.

The blasting is part of an ongoing CalTrans effort to add a 12.1-mile truck-descending lane to the freeway in San Bernardino County between Bailey Road and Yates Well Road. Construction, which includes repaving, is expected to be completed in late 2010.

CalTrans officials initially planned for the weekly blasting to end in April but now say it should be completed by the end of the month.

And I for one am pleased they are doing this.

But as far as driving versus flying...

In 2005 I dropped a friend off at LAX in Los Angeles, and from there drove straight through to Las Vegas, a 4 hour and 15 minute drive, and picked him up at McCarran where he had been waiting less than 10 minutes.

So why should I drive and endure all the bullshit required for air travel today?

I left downtown Seattle at around 5:30 this last Friday, and was on my way to my rental car at McCarran by 9:45.

Funny, isn't it, that a two hour flight of almost 900 hours AND a 15 mile drive to the airport took almost as long as a dropoff at LAX?

Channel 7 a few years back did a test. One person drove to Vegas and the other one flew. They left from the same location and had reservations at the same hotel. The one that drove got there 10 min. faster then the person that flew. Now you know why I drive too! Also it doesn’t help that I bring way to much stuff! LOL
