I'll be in las vegas soon and need to make a number of hobby-related calls.  For obvious reasons I would prefer to keep them off my regular cell phone (the calls are itemized, etc) and off the hotel bill.  I've heard of disposable cell phones, which sounds like it might be an answer--does anyone have any experience with this?  And, if it's what it sounds like (buy a phone with prepaid minutes and what's bought in vegas stays in vegas), then is there a store within driving distance of the Strip where I can pick one up?  Thanks...  (FYI: I'll be contacting providers who know me so I'm not trying to get around screening, etc.)

they're everywhere.  You can buy the Sprint/Virgin Mobile phones for as low as $19.95 (I bought one at Target today in fact).  Then you also buy a "Top Up" card.  Pay cash at the register.  Then you go to Fedex-Kinko's and anonymously sign on to the Virgin Mobile website and activate your phone, costs nothing to activate.  Then once the phone is on (takes a few minutes) you enter the top up card pin and you're good to go, totally anonymously, no questions asked, no traces left behind.

You can assign any exchange (area code) you want by filling in a fake address during the activation process. You can't pick a number, but the area code can be whatever you want.

Be sure to throw the phone in a trashcan at the airport as you leave Vegas, lol.

and recycle the cell phone.  I don't know what organization in town would be good but Shade Tree comes to mind as a good place to donate a cell phone.  Abused women and children could always use cell phones.

Besides, the battery and other components needs to be disposed of properly.
