I am fine let me first say. :-D

Was coming home from a tryst this afternoon.

I knew it was inevitable ...

Since moving here from a small town in waaaay upstate NY, where the biggest threat was a deer. People drive like nut cases on I-15 here.

Guy two cars up caused it by swerving (for apparently no reason), which made the one in front of me slam and skid. I slammed and skidded into his bumper ... car behind me hit me ... car behind him hit him ... and the semi 3 vehicles back was smoking his tires in a sideways skid, which clipped one other car.

The "Cause" driver sped off ... and no one got the plate.

Just basically a big inconvenience for all involved. Already have my rental car. They say it will be about a week before I get mine back.

Stay safe out there ladies ... but seriously though, we are at the roads mercy most times.

The important thing is you were not hurt.  Perhaps your best swerves are not in your car?  :)

Lorsha, what insurance company do you have?  I was rearended while I lived in Vegas, and the guy who hit me had Progressive, They handled everything from their center on Boulder Hwy., the rental vehicle along with the repairs, and had the car fixed and back in my hands in about a week.  The rental vehicle was another suv, since that is what I had.  They also wrote me a check for pain and suffering, and for time off work.  Glad to hear that you are not hurt, and might be hunting the idiot that caused the whole thing, pity that poor fool if you find him.

including yourself, are considered at fault in the eyes of the law for following too closely to be able to stop in time.  Each party is responsible to the car in front of itself.

That is the most important thing.  Everything else can be taken care of in time,

I was exiting the 15 fwy at Frank Sinatra when this guy w/ 2 passengers in a Toyota Camrey (Who wouldn't let me over) sped up and jumped lanes.  Next thing I noticed his car swerving irratically from side to side. There was a semi truck that was a few cars back too. I had exited the freeway at that moment and thought "This guy is headed for an accident". Though I didn't actually see the accident because I was already exiting. Is this a coincidence or just anothr incidence?

Actually the crazy guy had already passed the Russell/Frank Sinatra exit and the next exit would have been Tropicana. I can't believe I was that close to an accident.  At first I was next to the semi then I thought I don't like driving next to big trucks so I sped up and merged.  I had to get off the fwy and needed to merge again. That's when that crazy guy wouldn't let me over and he sped up so I got behind him.  While I was merging again and exiting the fwy then I noticed his car swerving back and forth. I think he had sped up and wanted to merge left again but there was a car in the way.  He lost control after that.  It's a miracle you weren't hurt.  I'm glad your okay:)

I think you dodged a serious bullet here!
Hope no one was hurt and have to disagree with the poster who said the driver of the Toyota would not be held responsible.

The short answer is it depends. Clearly this jerk was in part responsible for others swerving around to miss him and each other. The law in most states follows the last clear chance rule.
A few states, among them btw used to be New York Lorsha, do not and require the drivers following to maintain control of their vehicle no matter what the guy in front does.

Most states have some variation of the last clear change rule as part of their driving regulations. In other words did the drivers in back of him have any chance to avoid contact or did his behavior cause an unavoidable situation. That seems to be the case here but it would have to be played out in court..oh for joy..I know...
Hope you get your car back soon Lorsha and just as important they do a good job on the repair!

... that was him. Small world, hehe.

I wonder at any given moment, just how many of us are on the I-15 heading to and from the strip. Which just gave me an idea. To hell with the carpool lane, they should give us an escort only lane! :-D

hehehe...I got a good laugh out of that one about having an escort only lane on the fwy...You were coming from... and I was going to...

I only wish now that I could have gotten that license plate no. for you and the other people involved.

as happens in most of these cases, there is no identity of the ass hat driver, no license plate, and a misdemeanor traffic crime is not going to garner any sort of investigation squad to go after him/her.

Pay the fine, thank the lord nobody was hurt this time and move on.
