When I was living in Las Vegas, I talked to a guy who worked for a construction contractor that specialized in building parking garages.  The contractor he worked for built several of the hotel/casino parking garages in Las Vegas.  But Las Vegas wasn't the only place they did business, they built parking garages all throughout the western states.

Anyway, he said something interesting.  He said: "Las Vegas is the only place in the world where millions of dollars are spent to build parking garages but yet there is no charge to park in them."

I looks like that is no longer the case.

just like years ago the unheard of resort fee was introduced and soon after spread like wildfire up and down the strip because it didn't keep people from staying. I can see if your just taking up a parking spot and not really spending any money at the property charging a few dollars, but if your out for dinner and a show and some gambling or a hotel guest your already shelling out more than enough and should be comped for such a fee.

why the hell should people PAY to park at a casino? just to go inside and lose money??? It's so funny how they all look at us like we are criminals...when all the real crooks wear business suits and robes and are in positions of power. smh.

guess that means outcall to the strip just went up $20 lol

What's next - charging for beer and drinks while you're gambling as I'm sure places already have??
I live in Iowa and frequent a casino 30 minutes from my house / and when they monitor your beer or drink to 1 every 20 minutes - at 5 dollars a beer - otta be able to get as many as I'd want as I always stay down there after I'm done gambling
Been coming to Vegas for 20 plus years and seen big ( not so good ) changes in that time - as I'm sure everyone has noticed comped things getting less and less and then keep charging left and right for stuff / AKA - resort fees - now parking
Frustrating

I heard that on the news today too. What a bummer. Don't like the hassle of the traffic on the strip already but would tolerate it because you could hit a convenient garage, park and walk  to the different venues and attractions. I'm afraid it will catch on same as the resort fee.  I'll stay away more. How greedy can they get? Already fleece the average Joe.

They already charge for drinks...........by the time the cocktail hostess gets back with your drink, you have already spent........way too much on whatever gambling activity you were involved in.  She should tip you..........

about them starting to charge for parking last year.
According to the article and the news it will be $10 to overnight park and a little less if you are parking in the garage for only a few hours.Locals will have a grace period on having to pay the parking fees.
They also mentioned charging to park in valet for hotel guests and people who are just visiting the casinos/hotels but not staying there.
Bummer....I went to NYC a few years back and one of the times I had a rental car yikes over $50 to park the car in Manhattan.I was so happy that vegas was not like that. And now here we are.
I think the other non MGM properties will wait and see how the reaction is first and then implement their own parking fees or perhaps maybe they will keep their properties with no fees.
It seem as soon as they started building that new arena that is suppose to be so great for vegas economy they started figuring out other ways to gouge their guests and visitors out of even more money.

I've been to Vegas once or twice a year since '84.  Seen big changes, some good, and some not so good (RESORT FEES SUCK!)  When they forced pedestrian traffic to move blocks out of their way to get to the bridges, I stopped "strolling" along the strip.  When the taxi service fell off and prices increased in the late 90's, I started renting cars.  I have never been a big gambler, but even with as little as I gamble, drinking in the casinos has gotten harder and more expensive.  Now the parking is going to be expensive (I have always been told that that was part of the "resort fee").  I think that my currently planned trip (late January) to stay on the strip will be my last.  I will spend some of my time this year exploring Fremont and seeing if that might be a better option.
Maybe I'm getting old and turning into a curmudgeon, but the bright lights just don't seem to have the draw that they used to.  This annual pilgrimage may just be coming to  an end......  I miss the fun of the late 90's and the carefree attitudes of the early 2000's.

Much love to the ladies.... some things NEVER chang

I usually rent a car when I visit Vegas but if this becomes the standard,I will probably stick to cabs and public transit.

Someone here mentioned $10 for overnight which is of course a bummer.  But keep in mind how low that is compared to other cities.  Overnight in most cities (as someone else mentioned) for valet is around $45.  Even day parking is $30 in public lots.  Every time I go to Boston or Chicago I cringe seeing those rates, but I use Uber.

Nonetheless, disappointing to see this happening in Vegas.  Is there any way we can petition?

...if the hotels don't do something special for locals, I think many girls will need to increase their rates. I know I use valet a lot. Sometimes hotels are too busy and so far to walk in heels for self parking, and some hotels like Vdara only have valet. If I have to pay $45 or $50 for valet that is a big expense. I cringe when I have to pay Eros and P411 and others $1000 to $1500 for a month. At least I get something back for that...but not this, so this will really hurt!  I guess is the cost of doing business!
Some of us have modest rates compared to others...so I personally cannot imagine losing that money. Yikes! Not sure what to do right now...but this makes me uncomfortable for sure!
Xoxo,
May

at least they won't be charging their paying guests.
But for the locals after the grace period not so much.
I can see even more locals not coming down to a MGM properties.

I am 71 years old and don't remember paying for public toilets, and I know you are not even close to my age; in fact, you could be my granddaughter. :)  Maybe Los Angeles didn't have them.

Oh, I guess I just did!
Anyway, your post is right-on!  We'll have to meet !

With the new arena being about finished and it is a MGM property I do be believe, I can see why they want to charge for parking. Look at all the events they are going to hold. Between that and the Garden Arena they will be bringing in a lot of people just to attend those venues. Get money out of them for parking. Garden Arena brought in lot of people too for boxing, but they made money on them from betting. Some of the events at the arena aren't going to be bringing in as much betting money so they have to get it somewhere.
Validation for hotel guests will be good. Can't see just a key card getting you past though. How many of those are hanging around?
Locals and light occasional gambles are going to take a hit just to go to the strip. It sucks.

Just for the sake of their own guests -Cosmo will have to follow.
They are surrounded by the MGM Vegas empire in Vdara, Aria and Bellagio.

Soon Harrahs will follow to "protect" their customer parking experience at PH and Paris.

BY June - they all will be charging.
