Always culturally interesting,  for any NK girls you might happen to meet ...  This is not a sex worker, but she does relate her experiences in NK.

This is her second interview with Michael Malice

Park Yeon-mi is an attention-loving scammer and there have been multiple times when she has either lied or plagiarized the experiences of other DPRK refugees. When she first started telling "her story," she made it sound like she was living in destitution, but changed her tune after she got called out for revealing in other interviews that she lived a pretty decent life. She claimed things got "lost in translation," but it was simply a case of making shit up.

I believe she now lives in the US because she wanted to "study" here. Nope... she moved here because she basically got chased out of the ROK after people were getting tired of her bullshit. Even human rights activists have questioned many of her claims.

The reality today is that Yeon-mi has a pretty strong YouTube presence as a “DPRK defector and human rights activist”. She’s currently at over 400K subscribers.

The good news is that she spends much less time these days promoting the details of her own story. She spends most of her time raising awareness of the situation in DPRK. And she looks pretty cute doing it. She has even helped another defector launch her own channel doing the same thing. I suspect, unless she really screws up something, she’s going to continue to do well no matter what anybody says about how she got started.

This is just info. I am in no way trying to contradict what you’ve said about her past.

I didn't get that feeling at all, so no worries. My issue with her is that she's made a name for herself, as well as making money, by plagiarizing the experiences of those that might not be as attractive as her and therefore can't get paid for those speaking arrangements and interviews she gets.

It's hard because yes, she's trying to be a "human rights activist" and bring awareness to serious DPRK/Chinese atrocities, but at the expense of other real survivors. And at 400K subscribers, she's definitely making some money from these vids.

I’ve heard that argument. But I’m not understanding how it’s at the expense of those who can’t do what she’s doing.

It seems to me - but maybe I’m missing something? - that those who have no voice are benefitting while she, admittedly, is making money while she’s raising awareness of the situation in DPRK as well as some of the difficulties faced by refugees.

The only thing that is starting to worry me about what she’s doing is that, so far, I haven’t seen or heard of anything she’s doing with some of the money she’s making to help other refugees.

Though she’s only recently hit the level she’s at. So I think it’s probably too soon for her to be able to do anything significant to give back other than continue to raise awareness.

Let me know if you think I’m missing something.

I don't know what she is or is not doing but I would toss out the following.

If all she is doing is still selling the horror story of life in DPRK and collecting money to make people aware of the human rights problems there I don't really think she is helping much and to some extent that might be seen as "at the expense" of others like her that have escaped, and are escaping. She, the UN, the USA, ROK or even China if it actually was going to make the effort, are not going to change anything inside the borders there.

However, if her youtube channel is generating cash to help those who have escaped and are then faced with a lot of problems (acceptance, acclimating to outside norms and ways of life, etc.) then I think your claim is true -- she is definitely not harming anyone even if it started with deceptions.

It's just that given her start it seem like the phase, a leopard doesn't change its spots (or pick you animal) might apply.

I have no particular knowledge of whether she was in as bad a situation as is suggested.  However, a second hand recounting is less likely to motivate people to continue to be concerned with the plight of NK people.  So if she embellished her own situation in a way that highlights the plight of many in NK, I can't consider that a terrible thing.

Disagreed. Truth is important, however inconvenient. If someone is willing to embellish one thing, he/she will not be against embellishing in twenty more cases.

Now, I have little research on this woman so I don't know much and I can't say much one way or the other, and I certainly cannot fact check.
However, I know political shows use her for their agenda, and I've seen her gladly take it, earning $ in the process. Plus taking the $ for speeches.

To me, if you're fighting for something, it needs to be pure and uncompromised. When you're profiting off what you're supposedly fighting for, it kinda devalues the whole thing.

Not to mention, she became bigger than her story. She's a symbol that people point to. Those are always dangerous.

Just my two cents.
