But you're forgetting Say in your claim it's all about demand -- if people are demanding something in the market they first have to have supplied something else in order to acquire what they wanted. Agree with the 'live for today' attitudes. For years I have offered bonuses (often substantial) in one of 3 forms. Cash, IRA deposits with a 15% additional incentive or discounted equity shares in my company (ESOP). We carefully explain the benefits of saving for retirement in the selection process. In the 20-35 range 80% of men and 65% of women take the cash. 35-55 flips the script, only 25% of the men and 20% of the women opt for cash. Partly I am sure is because the older group is more financially settled by that age and they have also probably seen their parents enter their retirement years and got a wake up call.
As far as the need to have supplied something to have the resources to upgrade to bb - that's a marginal decision - the assumption is that demand for anything will be based on choice - how you will spend what you already have.

And yes, all decisions are marginal, we live a life that is nothing but a continuous stream of margins in which we take actions and make choices. But even then I don't think the intertemporal aspect or what we have is absent so people are jointely choosing between what they consume and what the save/produce and most are aware of this -- even if they forget or ignore that fact. You might find it more interesting to read what I wrote. I have no stance on the fee for BB. I did note that it's something that people have been complaining about -- be that they have to paid more or that the additional income is shifting services and increasing risks, or at least perceived risks for some.
But yes, I do think that younger people tend to have higher discount rates and often wish they had made different decisions. That view seems like it will be pretty accurate for some of those that have been paying for BB but complaining about the pricing.

I've read and understood your post just fine.
My point was that paying upcharge for bb isn't something that people will regret financially down the road. It's an add-on. They might be unhappy about paying for it after not paying for it. But If there were to be regrets, it would be about the whole thing, not just a part of it.
