I have wanted to visit Tampa for a while and want to finally take the plunge in October. This would be my first time visiting so I am not familiar with the area. I was wondering if it would be best to stay near downtown, the airport, or a different area.

There are a number of the usual hotels right near the airport.  but not a lot of dining or evening out options.   Downtown Tampa has really exploded.  Lots of hotels and many good dining and entertainment options in an area of downtown called channel side. and great walks along the river and Bayshore Blvd.

I disagree with thunderball on one point.  Both are decent areas.  There are plenty of dining options in the Westshore area, as much or even more so than downtown.  It is also close to the midtown area. Both areas aren't too far from Hyde Park.  The problem I've had with seeing ladies downtown is parking.  Further away from Westshore-in the Causeway area is a little further away from dining.

Hmm that's interesting for there to be no sort of transit system. But Atlanta doesn't have a very good one, so who am I to complain lol. But thank you, I do prefer to be in walkable areas when touring. What would you say is your favorite steakhouse or Italian restaurant?

Sorry for the delay in replying, limited, can be costly.  Discretion is depending.  Sometimes if garage parking is not available, street parking might be necessary.
