But I heard it just a little different. It was how to catch an elephant, fill the hole with ashes and when the elephant comes to take a pea, kick him in the ash-hole.

How do you catch a polar bear?  
Go to the north pole and cut a hole in the ice then surround the hole with peas.  When the polar bear stops to take a pea, kick him in the icehole.
