I am noticing in my job that the economy seems to be softening a bit, and it also seems to me after several years of rising provider rates, that there is some softness and more specials available.  This is a very expensive hobby so I guess that it makes sense that it would be tied to the economy.

If your clients are 1%s, then it would seem those ladies are doing well. As the johns level of income and wealth, starts to decline, it stands to reason what a provider can charge will go down as well. Around 2009 there was a lady who begged her cohorts on Back Page, in Rockford, to hold the line at $300. That didn't last more than a day. Babies needed formula, hookers needed drugs and pimps wanted a new ride.

That depends. I am one who only participates every eight months or so as I am not in a position where I can afford the hobby very often. Were the rising provider rates you referred to prior to the 2008 meltdown? And rates probably won't affected that much because it is only the top, say 15 or 16 percent of income who can really afford the hobby in the first place other than maybe once in a blue moon. On another topic, whey should "subject" be a required field for passage?

No.  I think rates went down in the 2007/2008 recession and have been rising since then, but it seems like they are starting to trend down recently.  I think there's more semi-pros and sugar babies who serve as alternatives to full time escorts these days, as was mentioned.

If you get there early enough on Monday you may be able to see them as they leave town.....

Seems like unrealistically high number to be honest. The newspaper describe itself as an enemy of predictability; I must agree on that. Why wouldn't they say who the author of the article is? Hmm..

The full study is pretty long. They study all aspects of prostitution in several selected cities, and unlike many of these studies, the authors don't seem to have much of an agenda. (That is, they haven't decided ahead of time that all providers must have been abused or psychologically damaged in some way.)

Or they have jobs, but they don't pay very well and so they free lance to get extra money.  I also think there's less stigma against sex work these days, and it causes more women to enter into it on a casual basis than would have before.

I have heard providers complaining about lots of traveling competition, less phone calls, drops in income. I do not expect to see rates come down like they did in 2008, because things are not that bad, but I also do not think we will see rates go up much for the next 12 months.
