I have decided to enter in the hobby and my first two attempts have been unsuccessful.  

Let me preface this by saying that I contact 2 very well known and highly reviewed providers.  Set everything up and both bailed on me.  The first one only upon me texting her asking what is up and I just got "death in the family" and that was it - never a follow up.  The second one just totally went radio silence?!

Is it always this hard?  Perhaps I need a new hobby.

What came first...the Chicken or the Egg?

That might be your problem...any lady who knows what's she's doing will screen.

Some screen harder than others but being a newbie makes it hard for you to pass their screening because:

1. You have no provider references.
2. You have no reviews.
3. Even if you are RS2K or a P411 member most still want provider references.

You probably have a chicken or the egg situation.

Perhaps they initially approved you and then had second thoughts.

Hang in their and when you do find a lady willing to see you follow the rules:

1. No explicit calls, text or emails
2. At the appointment leave the gift in an unsealed white envelope and NEVER MENTION MONEY
3. Be on time and clean.
4. Bring a small gift such as a scented candle

and, what helps if you are a new:

Fill out the secure form on the providers site
Plan ahead (esp. if she's visiting)
Specify the time, etc.

Once you have seen a reputable provider, it gets easier!

Thanks all.  I retraced my steps if there were any red flags that I gave out and I honestly don't think there was.  So I think it is just a case of the newbie jitters from a provider.  

Unless of course you guys think the repeated 3am calls was a bit too much?!!?!?!

When I first started lobbying, I had the pleasure of having a lady explain to me the "ropes."  She advised me to register with a verification service first and foremost.  After following her instructions, I contacted her for an appointment.  She agreed and then served as a reference.  She also invited me to a M&G where I met other ladies, who were extremely helpful.  Don't worry, you will get an appointment as each lady has their own selection process

All of the above mentioned is highly accurate, some girls are a little gun shy with newbies...

Never discuss money, or activities....ever...
also never haggle on donations or reschedule more than once.
 be polite, and friendly when you do communicate. I look at first playdates the same way I look at regular first dates, both people can be a bit nervous or shy, so if thats the case, just let the lady know you are either or both, it can be a great ice breaker...or just throw back a quick drink together and see where it goes.
 Also take into note, I find that 2 out of every 10 appointments usually fall through, due to scheduling issues, which should be explained by both parties... so you may have got your 2 out of the way  right up front, (winkwink)  

I have a pretty enhanced newbie screening form that makes me feel comfortable seeing gents new to the hobby...
