Mailing lists vs. Blogs... Perhaps both?

I'm pretty positive I'm going to be starting a blog soon. I'm a writer and the fact that I haven't doe this sooner is almost shameful.

However, I am also considering a mailing list but would like some information about how they work, what kind of content is usually included, etc. I would love some advice from providers who use them.

Hobbyists, what kind of things would you like to see in a mailing list? Or would you prefer a blog that doesn't require you to register and get emails?

Thanks a bunch!

Well,I also have all three.
The mailing list is good for site and service updates like specials, exclusive goodies, tour info,etc...
The blog is good for behind the scenes info,or in some cases a simplified version.of your site.
Its great to include poems,stories,promo/teaser goodies, and etc
I use twitter only to promote & network...
I dont take it or other social sites personally like others do.

Hope this helps

I use My mailing list and sometimes my group for specials  for members only and I use my blogs for amusement such as funny pics, interesting quotes etc.I pretty much update it daily on my website...
Good luck and have a great weekend!

She is very well spoken and her blogs are very informative and fresh.  Maybe you should e-mail her for some pointers.  I'm sure she would help.

So how does a mailing list work? Do you create it through your email account or do you have to pay for an outside service?
