So, my wife has been diagnosed with HPV. It's a very strange disease that I could easily have given her from hobbying or she might have gotten it before we meet (3 years) and laid dormant. There is no telling. Has anyone dealt with HPV on this board before?  I feel awful. I feel like I took every preventative measure and I still might have brought this home.

Here are some things my Dr. told me.

It's extremely transmittable and condoms are said to be not effective in in preventing transmission for ANY  sexual activity as much wider areas of skin can transmit the virus.

Most infected men will not show symptoms.  The majority of sexually active men will contract the disease at some point in their lives. It's the leading cause of genital warts.

Anyone who has had more than one sexual partner in their lives has been exposed to HPV.  Essentially it is like the flu in that regard -- if you breathe air on earth and are around people, you will be exposed to the flu virus.  It is true that condoms reduce the risk of HPV transmission but it is not 100%, more like 70% (this is based on a study of college women who started the study HPV negative and used condoms consistently over the study period).  So, bottom line, if you hobby, can you bring HPV to your wife.  Yes, but she probably had HPV before you.  Is it possible that her body cleared HPV since you've been together, and you gave it to her again (there are over 100 strains of HPV)?  The answer is yes.  Will it likely result in major disease for your wife?  It's possible but not probably especially if she gets regular pap smears.  Think about all the HPV that providers are exposed to -- if they get regular checkups, it's unlikely that they will end up with cervical cancer.

The shot is meant as a preventative measure, not a cure. If you have a pre-teen or a teen girl I would suggest having her get this shot. No parent wants to "think" of their child being sexually active...eventually they will...first time, college, etc.

The other disease most don't talk about is syphilis and how harmful it is to you and your spouse. Take a moment to learn about it and about what it does to you and your S.O. over 30 years. Please get tested. Not everything KILLS you...
