"Hopes spent little of the stolen money on himself or his wife, according to UK media reports. His wife has divorced him." You can bet those two, understated, sentences conceal a world of fury. Addicted indeed. Sort of funny that this seems to suggest a lady has a similar responsibility to a bartender to assure the guy is not being irresponsible before accepting his cash for services. Does that work the same in the US?

There was a guy, name escapes me, who did a lot of political fundraising, did not always follow the rules, kept a fair share for himself. Spent most of that money on drugs and (gay) sex parties - despite being married with kids he enjoyed a young man's companionship. Who am I to judge? When the feds busted him, his wife filed for divorce (I think she knew of his drug issues, understood his career was over, and had enough). Part of his plea bargain was to pay a fine, which turned out to be a subject of negotiation between the feds and his wife, since those were the two parties who had first claim on his assets.

An agreement was reached, the plea bargain was finalized, the details filed with the court, but they were not done. Apparently the wife had not known exactly how he spent the money before then, and once it became public, her lawyer came right back to the feds to ask for more - it is one thing to be a felon, but in the eyes of the divorce court, it is much worse to be fucking around with the stolen proceeds, so her demands and expectations just went up. Round two was required and the feds had to cough up a bit more, as it were.

Which makes me wonder if Hopes wife has any claim on money recovered from the ladies. Messy, indeed, but a cautionary tale for all of us.

I wouldn't have a way of knowing if a guy is embezzling money from a Toys R Us? In my hometown (Providence, RI) I fear more so "Mob Money"...
I'm shocked the girl has to pay it back. Did she write the guy receipts? How did they discover her and the others? Seriously, is this equivalent to what would happen in the States?
It gives a whole new meaning to "Hot Money"!
