See all of the ruins of Rome by foot... il Colloseo, Circo Massimo, etc. Walk as much as you can to take in as much as you can. I think I walked every inch of that city. Definitely try to make it to the Vatican to walk through the museum and St Peter's Square/Basilica. The architechture and art work is amazing. Venice... make sure to walk through as many of the alley ways as you can to find the best deals. And make it out to San Marco Square and the Duchal Palace. Again, it is breathtaking... and if you can get on the ferry to Murano to watch the blown glass being made, try that too. You are going to have a blast, Bebe!

You aren't flying through London first are you? I have a flight on the 10th as well ;)

Enjoy the trip.  Bottled water and good walking shoes makes Venice more fun.
Have an adventure and hop a train btwn cities while you're there.
The men of Chicago will all rest up so we are ready for your return.

Take a gondola ride in Venice around dusk.  As you quietly travel through the canals you'll be privy to the evening activities of the locals (eating supper, relaxing on their balconies, hanging out of windows gathering the fresh evening air, etc.) that is otherwise missed during the daytime.  It is the best way to see the Venetians living their everyday life.  Also, be sure to get away from the St. Mark's/Grand Canal Venice.  Walk the streets and get lost.  If you have time, take a boat over to Murano and check out a glass factory.  Enjoy!

Whomever the first will be upon your return better eat lots of Wheaties and oysters, and take his vitamins. I would offer to be first, but at age 74, I doubt I'd be up to the task. LOL

Have a marvelous trip, Bebe. Italy is a wounderful country to visit.

Watch out for gypsies, especially the kids. They create distractions, then pick your pockets or purses when your attention is elsewhere. Keep all valueables as closr to your body as possible. You might even want to keep a dummy wallet in your handbag. Be especially careful at outdoor markets.

Be safe. Have fun. Come back home happy.

When in Rome, consider a day trip to Pompeii. The brothels alone are worth seeing, but the baths house some of the finest pornographic art of the age. Many of the "mansions" (homes of the rich) have rooms devoted solely to sex and relaxation.

There are regular tours from Rome and Naples.

any Antinori is good.....any Frescobaldi is good.....had lunch with Peter Antinori one time....tall, handsome Italian, into aviation and good wines of course...........charming personality..........had dinner with Mr. & Mrs. Frescobaldi........charming old couple..........any of their wines are good, too!

I realize that I am joining this thread a little late, so I hope I can be some help.  I was stationed in Naples for a few years and know the area really well all the way up to Rome.  My best last minute advice is that you will have plenty of fun if you keep an open mind and feel free to wander into the areas that pique your interest.

1. Naples - The closer you are to downtown Naples the better the Pizza.  Look for Pizza fatto a legno, (wood fired pizza). Eat as much Mozzeralla di Buffalo or Caprese salad as you can, it isn't the same anywhere else in the world.

- Naples underground.  Hidden Gem,  candlelit tour of hand carved Roman tunnels and aqua-ducts under the heart of Naples.  Don't miss!

Piazza San Gaetano, 68

- Vesuvius.  A trip to Pompeii is nicely followed up with a trip up to the top of the volcano that buried it.  On a clear day you will get a nice view of the city and surrounding landscape and probably some sulfur vents.  The hike from the parking area to the top is a bit of exercise.  Pompeii + Vesuvius will take a whole day.

- Capri.  If the weather is nice a trip to Capri is worth it.  Make sure that you see the Grotto Azzuro.  You need to buy tickets at the sea port near downtown Naples.  Look for a ticket booth with "Aliscafi  Napoli Capri" Aliscafi is a hydrofoil ferry boat like the sea dog in Chicago, but has indoor seating and is a bit nicer.  Capri, Amalfi and Sorrento are all pretty similar but I love all three places.  A trip to Capri will take the whole day.

- Lago di Averno, Arco Felice Vecchio, Monte Procida, TorreGavetta.  All very cool places in the Naples area, but if you can't find them on your own then they are probably more of a hassle than they are worth.  Lago di Averno was Dante's inspiration for the entrance to hell and there is a lot of good folklore with that place.

2. Rome.  My favorite city in the world.  My advice is to use the subways there, they are superb.  Lots of good restaurants to the NW of the Vatican.  Go a little off of the beaten path to get away from the tourist areas and have REALLY GOOD pasta.  Besides going to the Coliseum and the Vatican, I recommend seeing the Spanish steps (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) and the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain which are all in good walking distance and worth seeing.

3. Florence. There are a lot of druggies walking around but some great shopping.  The Duomo di Firenze and the tower outside are cool.

4. Venice Rocks.  Maybe a bit smelly at this time of year but it's amazing.  I'm sure you will do fine here.  For food, depending on the restaraunt, I would say skip the pasta and pizza and go with something more northern Italian.

I meant to include the abbey of Monte Cassino (Abbazia di Monte Cassino).  This is between Naples and Rome, and a little off of the beaten path.  This is an abbey at the top of a mountain where monks live that the Nazi's took shelter in during WWII.  We bombed the hell out of this place and there was a huge battle to claim this steep mountain.  It was rebuilt and is now gorgeous, beautiful views from the mountain top, seriously, very breathtaking views from up there.  Also has a very pretty cathedral.  Nearby is a Nazi cemetary, a Polish cemetary (My GF at the time was Polish, this place is very significant to them) and a US cemetary.  Even if you aren't into the WWII stuff like me, the views are soo worth the trip.

You will enjoy it (even without the Italian stallion). No need to rent a car....just take the train to the different towns and cab/walk when you are there. In Amalfi...take a car tour (Positano, Ravello, Amalfi)  ...a bit more expensive but a.lot safer than driving yourself.  Enjoy...and share some pictures when you return.
