The "FAQ for Newbies" board is a great resource for infomation on this topic. This topic shows up about every week over there and there are always plenty of hints and suggestions.
I'll boil it down to a few of tips.

keep in mind that LE does not, in general, have some master plan to combat this p4p hobby. "Stings" are usually set up for a reason - they are receiving an inordinate amount of complaints in a certain area, there is drug traffic, reports of violence or trafficking, or maybe it's just an election year. I'm not saying that there is NOTHING to worry about, but if you follow the above advice, keep a low profile, trust your instincts when a "date" smells fishy, keep up on the local news to see if there are "crackdowns" going on, etc... that's about as safe as you can be.
