They're actually named for Thomas Sumter, who was a Revolutionary War general in SC who was known as "The Gamecock." The name would be somewhat cool for its history and uniqueness if it weren't for South Carolina fans' insistence on dropping the first half of the name whenever they refer to their team. Man I hate it when we lose to SC, makes the next year completely miserable. I'll have to get some of the ladies here to cheer me up.
