...so have done some research on the subject. It depends on what risks you're comfortable with.

DATY is actually a very low-risk sexual activity and is much lower risk than BBBJ for both the giver and the receiver in part because the skin isn't being abraded like it is with penetration. As someone giving oral sex on a higher-risk female partner, you're most likely going to need to worry about herpes and throat gonorrhea, but here's the breakdown of the risks you'd be looking at:

Herpes - Type 2 Herpes is the type that prefers the genitals, thus you're less likely to have it transmitted to your mouth. If she has type 1 herpes on her genitals - less common but possible - it can be transmitted. You may already have type 1 (oral) herpes and not have outbreaks; this is very common, actually. You can reduce risk of transmission with a barrier but not eliminate it; herpes is transmitted through skin to skin contact during viral shedding, not through fluid transmission. That said, transmission risk is considered low. Herpes is treatable but not curable.

HIV - Giving oral sex to a non-menstruating female partner is considered very low risk for HIV transmission. Female sexual fluids are considered to contain very little to no risk of HIV transmission. Blood is another story. The following would make the risk non-negligible: broken skin on her vulva (more than you'd get from light razor burn), broken skin/cuts etc. in your mouth, presence of menstrual blood. The risk of getting either of these infections through giving DATY is still pretty low, but you're more likely to get gonorrhea or chlamydia through giving DATY than you are HIV (extremely low risk).

It's actually easier to transmit these types of infections in either direction with BJs due to the anatomy involved - DATY just doesn't abrade the mouth as much. Both gonorrhea and chlamydia are curable with antibiotics, though some strains of gonorrhea are becoming antibiotic resistant.

As far as risk reduction, here are your options, ranked from most to least risk:

- DATY on a provider without a barrier
- DATY on a provider through a permeable barrier (panties) - not going to stop fluid transmission but will reduce it.
- DATY on a provider with a barrier
- Skipping the DATY with a provider altogether

On DATY with a barrier: Good Vibrations over in Brookline sells the Hot Dam brand dental dams, which are latex free (so there's no smell or taste, and people with latex allergies can still use them). Those are the barriers I personally use when performing or receiving DATY with a barrier. They do transmit feeling very nicely. If your primary thing with giving DATY is your partner's pleasure, or the feel, scent, or reactions you get, using a barrier will probably not ruin your experience.

If you're mainly into it because of the taste or the feeling of fluids all over your face then putting something yummy like syrup or flavored lube (on your side of the barrier only!) might help but it's still going to be a very different experience for you.

Talk to your favorite providers about how often they get tested for STIs, which tests they get, etc. Many of us don't mind or are happy to answer these kinds of questions if they're asked sincerely especially if you're a regular. Personally I get tested quarterly for HIV, Hep B and C, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia and test biannually for Herpes 1 and 2. Used to test for herpes quarterly but after talking to other sex educators realized that a) most free testing centers on the east coast don't test for herpes, and using private labs only twice a year is a better deal since b) in the absence of outbreaks, testing quarterly for herpes was actually overkill.
