I was a huge fan in the mid 1990s. Had all their CDs. But I never got to see them in concert. I had a brief stint of homelessness at a tender age during that time period as a result of divorce and unexpected death and had to help my sisters get through it and finish school. For a period of time (finishing my degree and before getting a real job), I lived out of a little Mazda hatchback parked off in random cul de sacs and parking lots after the family house got repossessed. I had a Sony Walkman CD player that connected with a fake tape cassette in the car's tape deck and used to listen to Morphine to fall asleep.
The song "French fries with pepper" always haunts me, because of the 9/9/99 lyric. I was stunned when I heard he died in summer 1999. I hope that indeed he was "sittin on the back porch drinking red wine" in a better place when that day rolled around. That band and those songs really helped through a pretty dark time. Most of my friends had never heard of Morphine or Mark Sandman. I've made it a point to play them for my kids as they grow up. And tell them the story of the little green Mazda.... It's nice to see other people remember them too. May the music live on.
