... for site seeing in Boston. My girlfriend and I will be arriving in a month for our first trip to Boston and would like to know what  places are a must see ... Interested in historical landmarks, great dinning and a good night spot or two ( we will be in back bay & Cambridge areas) We'd prefer something with a mature atmosphere that we don't have to fight a crowd to get thru.

Thank you in advance for your help

in terms of culture.  They have opened new additions, and the stuff there is top notch.  On a weekday, there won't be crowds.

Another good museum is the Inst. of Contemporary Art which is in the Seaport district of South Boston.

And in the Fenway, there is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum that is a real gem of place.

Fall is a busy time in Boston, so the traditional historic sites are going to be busy.  Nevertheless, if it's a nice fall day, the Public Garden and Boston Common should be a nice stroll.

In Cambridge you should check out Harvard Yard.  Architectually, it's quite compelling.

Old Ironsides (oldest commissioned ship in the US Navy) in Charlestown is worth a peek, but it will be crowded.

I haven't been on one, but people have told me that they like the Duckboat tours that leave from around the Prudential Center in Copley Square.  You will need to reserve for them in advance.

The waterfront and nearby North End (which is always crowded) are worth taking in.  The North End is the Italian district with lots of great dining, and you will do well just about any place you dine there.  My favorite seafood restaurant is on Long Wharf on the waterfront (near the Aquarium that is worth a look.).  It is called The Chart House.

Very close to the North End and the waterfront is Fanueil (Pronounced Fen'-il but nobody does.) Hall Market Place with great shopping and places to eat.

In Copley square you'll find great upscale shopping, especially on Newbury Street.  My favorite restaurant there is Sorellinas.  They have upscale Italian.

Enjoy!

The Freedon Trail on Beacon Hill is a great walking site seeing event. And it's free.

Most beautiful location in Boston area.  Nicest in springtime, but still beautiful in fall.  No crowds, interesting history.  And free.  Boston Public Library is also very nice (check for times of free tours  -- they're excellent -- trust me, more interesting than you think).

Take the train to Maine and see what is waiting for you here. Portland is a lively small town with great atmosphere and dining. It is so different than downtown Phoenix, much better than Hanny's on Adams and 1st street. If you come to Maine, be sure to wear the correct jewelry, something like snowflakes, or sea glass.
