The Swan Boats on still on my "to do" list. Since it will be your first visit to Boston ( I LOVE this city), I suggestion Back Bay. You'll never please everyone as far as location goes though. It's where I stay when I come into Boston.

Boston has sooo many great places to dine, I'm hoping some of the locals will chime in. Newbury Street is a cool place to visit as is the North End. You'll find yourself transported back in time in the North End IMO. It's a great for Italian food and bakeries. entail Mall in Back Bay for shopping! I LOVE the Prudential Mall in Back Bay for shopping.

Personally I think the fall season is a great time to visit. Vacations are over and the temps are wonderful.
