My two favorite spots are NY Prime and Kevin Rathbun's Steakhouse. There are several great places to eat in town, but no one tops NY Primes Chilean seabass!

Go to the Westside Market and stroll around, great food and shops, http://westsidepd.com/visitor-information.  The best coffee shop in Atlanat is Octane (http://octanecoffee.com/westside/) south on Howell Mill and the coolest artist area is the Goat Farm around the corner off Huff from Westside Market.  It has a pay what you think it should be coffee shop.

A wonderful fresh and healthy place to lunch in Buckhead is Souper Jennie's. she'es been on the Today show and published a couple of books abut her soups and salads or you can try her other place, Cafe Jonah, that is across Paces Ferry Place from Whole Foods, also in Buckhead.

Have fun.

depending on what you are looking for. Here are a couple of suggestions that you might find interesting.

But first off I'm going to suggest avoiding the Varsity. Yes it's an Atlanta tradition and a landmark and yada yada yada. It's a fast food restaurant with rude people, rude service and gross food. It's basically a grease pit for indigestion and gas. Just my $.02.

Atlanta Braves/Gwinnett Braves - if you like sports the Braves are leading their division (not saying much as the National League East sucks this year but STILL they are leading). Gwinnett Braves are a chance to watch (at a very affordable price) some future stars of baseball.

Stone Mountain - if you haven't been it's a great place. Check out the museum, walk to grounds, see the sites. Stay late for the laser show. If you and your son are in even decent shape it's also a nice walk to the top.

High Museum of Art

Michael C. Carlos Museum

Martin Luther King Historical Site

Fernbank Museum of Natural History/Science Center

The Atlanta Botanical Gardens

Zoo Atlanta - I go several times a year as I love animals and enjoy taking pictures. You're lucky in that thus far this year we haven't had the typical heat/humidity of an Atlanta summer.

As always, be safe and have fun

the whale sharks at the GA Aquarium and other touristy things to be found around Centennial are great attractions.
The Varsity off North Ave is a landmark and a delight for any grease lover.  Chilli dog with onions, a Frosted Orange, and a order of onion rings work just fine for me when I get that craving

In addition to what others have said:

Foodwise I strongly recommend the VORTEX Grill off Peachtree, one of the best burger joints in ATL and unabashedly naughty. Cheaper fare than Rathbuns/Capital Grille/ other fine establishments but also a different crowd there. Atmosphere is pretty laid back. It's also Easy walking distance (about 3/4 mile) to the High Museum/ATL Symphony Hall (always something good going on there).

Depending on when you come down, it's also 29 days, 21 hours until DragonCon... because you said 'anything amazing'.

See some local flavor...many listed here, I will reiterate:
The Varsity...Marginal Food, at best, but a local landmark and definitely falls into the "Must See" Category
The Vortex...Best burgers and atmosphere for fun anywhere, tops my list of must see's for food.
and, as for the sleeze factor...head on down to the Clermont Lodge, just to say you've been there.

Stone Mountain does fireworks on selected nights (if you're not busy)

Out on the southwest side of town is Historic Banning Mills.  Ziplining through the trees, including one of the longest lines in the northern hemisphere-- the 2300 foot screaming eagle

If you like a scenic drive in the mountains, go up I-75, then I-575, and it turns into 515, the Georgia Mountain highway.  There's a town called Blue Ridge, and a place called Mercier Orchards which is a fun place to check out and get apples, peaches, and blueberries (depending on the season)

I've always wanted to check out the Georgia Guidestones out by Athens, but have never gotten around to it just yet.

If you're a fan of The Walking Dead TV show, the towns of Grantville and Senoia double as the town sets used in filming.

The first being the one in Little Five points.  If you're a bit artistic hipster type, Little Five is definitely a place to check out.  The Vortex is one of the prominent buildings in the area where you walk through the mouth of a skull to enter.  Reading the menu alone is worth the visit.

There's also Fernbank museum and the Fernbank planetarium, too.
