I just bought a new laptop this weekend and I am getting these aggrivating pop ups from something called a messenger service. Argh! I know there is a way to get this to stop but I can't remember how to do it.
That sounds like the aol messenger thingy. It enables you to carry on a dialog with someone. I think maybe all you have to do is click on the icon to disenable. Give it a shot... what the hell, you're not going to live forever!
If you have Windows XP there is a function in the pc itself you can use to disable them. I did it on mine and haven't seen a pop-up anywhere in months, even though on the isp (aol) screen the allow pop-ups is set to "yes". I'll look around and try to figure out how to tell you to do it...
It's probably still in there somewhere, look in your help menus. I had XP pro, went back to XP, I wuz just more familiar with it. ANYTHING is better than Windows "ME".
I can't remember how I disabled pop-ups on my pc, but if you go to Yahoo.com, search on "disable pop ups" or just "pop ups" there are a gazillion places foung. I got my info SOMEWHERE in there...
On your desktop, right-click on the My Computer icon. Click on Manage. In the Computer Management console, expand Services and Applications. Click on Services. In the Services window, double-click the Messenger service. Select Manual in the Startup Type dropdown menu. Click the Stop button. Click OK. No more Messenger popups.
If you can't find your My Computer icon on your desktop, you will either need to add it or get to the services console through the Control Panel. Let me know if you want me to get you there another way.
p.s. This is entirely different from any Instant Message program. You don't need this service running on your computer, and it was really stupid of Microsoft to enable it by default.
It might be that those messenger services are in your startup menu...anyway it is good to check what program starts up when you turn your computer on. Each one of those takes up RAM and slows your computer down. To do this go to START >RUN and type in "msconfig" then click "okay." At the top click on the START UP tab. You will see a list of programs that start up when you turn your computer on. Uncheck anyone that has to do with messenger service, AOL, MSN, or anything else you don't want to start up when you boot your computer. This works for Win 95 to XP. I do this about once a month and whenever I am tuning up one of my clients computers.
