Is that there is so much information readily available absolutely everywhere that goes into perfect detail explaining the real story behind the whole matter, and yet tons of people still buy into it.

If I ever thought there was a legitimate concern regarding the end of the world, I would definitely do more research on the matter than just listening to media propaganda that actually seems to enjoy thriving on this kind of controversy.
The Mayans couldn't continue the calendar forever and there are simple explanations as to why they thought it would be a good place to end it where they did.

I don't think astronomers give any credence to. I think the general consensus is that there is nothing pointing to such a possible alignment, various reasons the Mayans (and even modern technology) could not have predicted it, and discrepancies concerning the size, shape, start and end points of the Milky Way means data can be interpreted with bias to a particular outcome.
Science definitely isn't my area of expertise, but that's the gist I got from most of what I've read over the last few years.
The link to the article below might be associated with a government agency, but I thought it made for a decent read and there are certainly a lot of other articles around that echo its sentiments.
On a real note I visited the myan ruins in mexico this summer the guide explained it by very simply saying it is the end of the calender not the world and that it just starts over....... All of the planets will be in line that is why they ended there.

The Mayan King was having this calender made and Mayan creating the calender became disgruntle with King. One day they were smoking to much shit and decided to fuck with the king. So they told him he would live till the calender ended in 2012.
But for real, I read that Dec ??,2012 is when our solar system passes thur the Milky Way Plane...ie equator. Still reshearchin this so not sure.
