Social Media and the Hobby

Ok so being a fossil I have not really taken the plunge into social media in a big way.  However being in a job transition it was suggested I may want to use services such as Facebook and Twitter to assist with this process.  Given that Facebook looks and feels a lot like LinkedIn which I use for business, I decided to see if there was any benefit to Twitter.  So last night I set up an account and just began trolling around inevitably happening upon various provider pages -- ok so it wasn't purely business as I know some providers seem to be big into Twitter based on links from their websites.  Anyway after a couple of hours of trolling around I have a couple of observations.

First, my overall observation of social media is that it is the proverbial message in a bottle.  People shouting out with no particular audience in mind to satisfy a need for social interaction.  Have we really become such an isolated and lonely society that shouts into cyberspace have replaced the intimacy of true friendships and acquaintances?  Now that observation is not on point for this board but the next is.

Having reviewed a number of provider profiles from around the country, I am astonished at the number of rants concerning hobbyists by providers who apparently are using Twitter as a marketing vehicle since they advertise following them on their website.  Now I realize that the ladies run into a fair number of wackos and time wasters in this business, but do regular businesses rant about their customers -- not publicly.  My point is ranting is appropriate in the right forum, but if you are marketing it would appear unwise unless you have all the business you can handle.  This may sound crass but there are many gentleman who judge a lady by how they present themselves and if they wanted to be with someone who was prone to bitching they could just stay home with their significant other.

So once that's accepted....that everyone does it....then it's just another way to choose who you want to see.

I think there's a difference between someone who bitches about every client, or every day, and someone who bitches occasionally about a bad day.
Let's face it and try to be real.....some guys are absolute time-wasting, whiny, dirty (and not in the good way), assjack douchebags.
If a lady bitches about that....I have no problem with it.
Frankly....I like a lady with a little edge to her.

Now....if someone wants to kid themselves and live in fantasyland and believe that these ladies are all perfect, quaint little princesses who would dare never speak a negative word (stepford hooker).....then let them choose, and fool themselves, accordingly.

Just sayin'

Don't disagree with your observations, just saying that if your using it for marketing you need to be cognizant of your audience that's just good business which is what this is in the end.

I agree that you don't want your bitching about your clients out there where your clients can see it. But as you say this is a business and as with any business there are those that are good at it and those that are not. There are also those ( in this business and others) that think if you don't like the way I do business there is a guy right behind you who doesn't care. Some of them are correct and some are not.

...and why is anyone using a social media outlet to comment, bitch, and/or put the hobby out there for all to see. Not very discrete. Which takes us back to what I said above.

Only social media we need is TER....if only the Hobby boys out there would tell the truth....if it looks like a duck and fucks like a duck...it must be a duck...A 10 is a 10 is a 10, rare....a 9 is a 9 is a 9...also rare...an 8 is not a 9 or 10...Boom done!

I have come to the conclusion that Twitter and the hobby is not for me so I agree on TER.  But is my 7 your 8 and did my 8 just become a 9 because I was hornier than all get out lol.
