What u use for. If its for Internet and a place to store pics/videos then u don't need top of line pc/Mac. I recently bought one with 2nd highest processor, 8gb ram, and 2 TB of storage for less than 400. Of course u won't get that price for a Mac. The only gotcha is that it comes with window 8 which would require a learning curve compare to the older version of windows. I bought it from outlet.lenovo.com. As for a Mac, the cheapest u can get is a Mac mini. U won't save buying new but u can save a little buying refurbish off apple website. Go to the store page.  Scroll across and look for certified refurbish.  There is one for about $550. Again for most people u don't need that much horse power unless u into heavy gaming and video processing/editing. Refurbish is the way to goes since they are good as new except a lot cheaper. Hope this help!!

Sloane--

If you're buying a PC (Windows Box), to do everything YOU want to do on a PC (you're not a gamer trying to buy a high end expensive smoking box), to get the best and some of the newest features, I'd definitely head over to Fry's--tell them your price range and have them help you pick out the best pcs in it including their sales--they have more space and a far better selection than usually Best Buys, Microcenter, or the websites like Tiger Direct, New Egg, and Pricegrabbers which are limited by shelf space or in the case of the popular websites I just named they have a pretty small inventory.  They have a big sale on Labor Day Weekend.

When you go to a place like Fry's at Alpharetta or Gwinnett with a good selection and a lot of sales especially on Labor Day weekend,  ask them to show you pcs with SSD Hybrid technology which allows you to put the files you want in a situation where speed is a lot greater without having to pay the big bucks for a full blown SSD (solid state drive). Also solid state drives have come down considerably in price this fall.

If you have your heart set on a Mac on a limited budget, refurbished Macs are often a good deal and perform like new and essentially are new for all practical purposes.  You can Google/Bing for a zillion sites, but apple sells them at sites like

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac

Most of the "refurbed Macs" were returned very soon because the buyer decided they wanted something else or something newer--they run like new and they're backed up by a warrantee.

They have a one year warrantee, free shipping, and an Apple Care Protection Plan that will fix or replace it much like on the iPhone or iPad.

BTW "Mac Rumors" is one of my fave fangirl/fanboy sites for covering/explaining all things Mac, and this is their buying guide--they have everything Apple makes covered the best.

I'd check  out these links for PC Buying Guides with the newest features in your price range, then I'd go over to Fry's--show them some of the models you found and tell them to plug what they have into your price range.

If you are not looking for Mac book or a very powerful all in one desk top, you can get a Mac mini which is under $700. You can use all your peripherals such as key board, monitor etc.

It will do all the things you need to do on a computer. You can also get word processor, spread sheet software for $10 each. You can also down load a web development program if you want do that.

I would recommend you to go to a Mac store nearby.

Another option is for you to go to the online apple store and see what deals they have on the refurbished Macs. It comes with the same warranty as the new ones.

PM me if you need more info.

Good Luck.

They sell their PCs "clean", which means all the junk software that Dell, Acer, etc put on there is removed.  The pcs are clean, fast, touch screens, etc. It will make you love a PC again.  Apple is notably over rated and over priced.

I got my refurbished 27'' iMac desktop through Apple online for less than $1500. There are always deals on last years models or refurbs on their site for even cheaper. Mine was a little pricey because of the huge monitor and the hard drive space, but if you check it out you may be surprised that maybe you can buy a Mac. :-) Good luck! The refurbs come with warranties too!
