Regarding the original post, shower vs grower, who cares? I thought the end result was what mattered? If it's 2 inches soft and 6 inches hard, vs 5 inches soft and 6 inches hard, it's the same thing right?

FWIW, I've NEVER gotten out the ruler. Never had any complaints, and quite frankly, I find it a bit demeaning to try to measure.  One man's opinion.
