Flashback more than 40 years ago.   Singing about whiskey, rye, Chevy trucks.  Ah, my American Pie  and lamenting the day the music died.

I see that the notes and original lyrics penned in the creation of this amazing song are up for auction.  Expecting to raise more than 1.5 million.

Somehow I hope they never actually figure out what all the lyrics mean, that is half the fun of the song right.

Do you have any favorite memories linked to a particular song!

American Pie is one of my songs.   Paradise By The Dashboard Ligrs would be the other.   How about you?

Great topic.  Actually I am fond of the two you already mentioned.  Here's some of my faves with links.

AC/DC - You shook me all night long.  Because - ok not even going to dignify that one with an answer.  Because they're f'ing AC/DC of course.  LOL.

https://youtu.be/zWCINQn6k0s

Sade - Is it a crime?  Actually anything by Sade is just excellent sexytime music.  She's lovely, talented, mysterious, and she can just slay it with a microphone.

https://youtu.be/kIP7HPYSr-0

Buddy Guy - Feels like rain.  Just an amazing song (John Hiatt).  If you've never seen Buddy Guy live - please treat yourself - and welcome to the world of music.  Arguably the best guitarists in the world and certainly one of the best entertainers in the world.  Taught a little known guitarist named Eric Clapton much of what he knows.  If Buddy's sung it then it's already been sung.

https://youtu.be/Xnu04SqI66E

Joni Mitchell - A case of you.  Just heartwrenching and brilliant.  Still holds up over 40 years later.  And yes, I am old thank you very much.

https://youtu.be/0YuaZcylk_o

Colin Hay - I just don't think I'll ever get over you.  The best sad song I've ever heard.  Anything by Colin Hay is pretty brilliant though.

https://youtu.be/O5J-DtKldpE

Madonna - Love don't live here anymore.  Not a big Madonna fan but I thought her remake of the old Rose Royce classic was outstanding.

https://youtu.be/nE1orzwauEw

Rising Appalachia - Swoon.  Short, sexy, fantastic imagery.  "Dip me in chocolate sauce then lick off all my toes..."  I think I'm in love.  And these talented sisters are local btw.

https://youtu.be/5mxCBWCarQE

Pearl Jam - Black.  Man o man. Moving, beautiful lyrics combined with Vedder's passionate delivery.  Just a devastating depiction of lost love.

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why? Why? why?
Can't it be, can't it be mine...?"

That's how it's done ladies and gentlemen.

https://youtu.be/cs-XZ_dN4Hc

And to end on a fun one - pound for pound the best drinking, fighting song ever penned....

The Pogues -  If I should fall from the grace with God.  It's the f'ing Pogues, come on.  I don't care if you're Irish or not - doesnt that song just make you want to start throwing chairs around?  No?  Well have a few beers let me know then.. :-)

Ok, let me go boys...

I wasn't even a thought in my dads head.... GREAT song..

Meatloaf is a long time favorite of mine as well...actually met the man in Covington when he and P.Swayze were filming "Black Dog"....

If I had to pick an artist I'd have to say Kenny Chesney  a.k.a. the country Jimmy Buffett.....too many similarities in his songs to my actual life...

Edie Brickell and New Bohemians song "What I Am" was one of those songs.  F me if I know what the lyrics mean but it was playing on the radio first time I got some at a college party with a MILF who was ~10yrs older than myself. We ended up having a Fantastic Weekend while her kid was at Baby Daddy's. Just used each other... well.

"Philosophy is a walk on slippery rocks,
Religion is a light in the fog."

Every time I hear that song.... I smile.

I think I just fell in love with you ;-)

This is one of my favorites and it reminds me of how times have changed because it was my first concert, and I actually *camped out in a Hecht's store parking lot to get tickets* pre-internet.

Ok, Miss Caylee.  I'll see your U2 and raise you...

But first answer me this...
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?

Tell me that young lady...

The best break up (fuck you!) song ever written (played it in my car on the way home lol - how in the world could I forget that one?).  Just great to let those frustrations out on.

The Black Crowes - Seeing things.  That whole album is just incredible, but this is my favorite song of theirs.

https://youtu.be/BACdXX2HmTo

And I'll throw in one bonus track.  :-)  IMHO The most beautiful song ever written.

Charlotte Church - Flower Duet (Lakme)
There's a reason why this is used in so many films to convey heaven or an angelic quality.  It's mystical.  Forgive me Charlotte for lumping you in with the Black Crowes.  Well, who knows maybe she has a copy of "Shake Your Moneymaker" laying around?

Bet you couldn't tell I'm passionate about music...

but they don't go as far back. :)

Ain't Even Done with the Night by John Cougar (before he called himself Mellencamp): Reminds me of my first incredible crush, in 7th grade. I was totally in love with this guy, and waited 10 years to have him. It was well worth the wait. We're FBFs now. Lol!! But he still doesn't know that I was madly in love with him.

This was the video that was playing on Headbanger's Ball when we kissed for the first time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUquRER0Yy8

Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes: I kissed a really hot boy to that song at a party. And I touched his penis- my very first penis touch. Still in HS. Still a virgin. God what I could do with his beautiful penis now!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELpmmeT69cE

Take My Breath Away by Berlin: reminds me of being particularly naughty with two boys just after HS... I remained a virgin but got a taste of heaven!

Here goes....I was 16 and met a man 10yrs above me.  He was new in town and I was taken back from the moment I met him. He had roses sent to my employer with a note attached for a date.  I accepted (my mom did not know he was 26.) He was alot of fun to be around and the Sex was incredible. Fast forward to 3+mo of dating... an unexpected guest walks into my place of employment and informs me she is this guys fiance. She drove in from MO to meet me ( he must of told her he met someone.) and to let me know they have a young child together. I am 16 and not ready for this!!

Somehow in all this we all became friends and I became their trusted babysitter. I wanted him everyday, but kept it clean. She and I became the best of friends. We were at the beach one day, her a wine spritzer and me a sprite sharing a bag of M&M's. She told me that she dedicated the song.."Can't You See" from Marshall Tucker" to me because I was the one that stood between her and him.  It wasn't long after that, that they moved back to MO.

That is the only song that brings me to happiness and heartache at the exact same moment in time!!

Not to be argumentative, but all of the lyrics' meaning of American Pie have been figured out years ago.  Everything in the song refers to events in rock and roll.  For instance, the Marching Band refers to the Beatles, The Joker is Bob Dylan, The Sacred Store is Fillmore East.  The song is a history of Rock n Roll
