I agree with FlaBoomer that things have changed.  As I recall it was either a doorman at the hotel or the yellow pages that helped you make a connection.  I guess I started when I started traveling in the late 60's.  My first encounter was in Rocky Mount, NC with the young lady traveling from Raleigh.   Speaking of time in the hobby.....
