Several months ago my MD suggested a vitamin supplement program for overall health. Part of the regimen includes the supplement St. John’s Wort. Research on the web indicates that this supplement is a mood enhancer. However, I have also found that it is a dream enhancer.

Now, I know that I normally dream but, since taking this supplement, I awake remembering them.  These dreams have been WILD. Some have been very erotic while others have been disturbing, especially those involving my children.

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced similar instances with St. John’s Wort specifically or just dreaming in general.

Is it that your dreams are actually just very vivid?

I believe it is a genetic sensitivity, but I often have rather incredible dreams after eating mushrooms (regular, white mushrooms).

Grace Slick says that "the ones that Mother gives you don't do anything at all", while Mick Jagger seems to think that "Mother's Little Helper.... helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day".

Who to believe? :-)

Mine are as I often describe the colors in my recollections.

Placebos is what Grace was talking about while "mothers little helpers " is what they called Valium

I've heard that is rare and that you can only dream something up have felt.ie you can dream you fall but wake or change dream before hitting bottom. I used to dream I could fly but always crashed on landing

Woody is correct...

This is the first section of the song, 'White Rabbit'

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

I was just making an irreverent comment about rock and roll drug lyrics, not meant to be literal.

If you want to be technically literal, though, "the ones that Grace Slick's mother gives you" are not placebos, they are ordinary medicine that Mommy might give you when you are not feeling well, like baby aspirin. And "mother's little helpers" were not just valium, but any of the barbituates that were over-prescribed to mommies in the 60s and 70s.

Below is a pretty interesting article about color dreams.

I do remember reading years ago that people dreamed in black & white, and "added in" the colors later.
I myself haven't remembered a vivid dream in a long time, and don't really remember if my dreams of old were one or the other.

This article postulates that maybe when most of mass media was black and white, we tended to dream in black and white, while today the preponderance of color in media allows (or pushes) us to dream in color.

Thanks for that.

Thinking back on some vivid dreams I have had, I think the only time I do dream in color is when an object is red.
