I used Tracfone for a while, and it served it's purpose. The only thing I didn't like about it was when you buy airtime you also buy a time frame. So say you buy 90 minutes, it comes with a 2-3 month activation. If you don't use that 90 minutes in that time, you still have the minutes, but have to buy more to activate the phone again. I stopped using it when I got to having over 1000 minutes, but always running out of time to use them.
That was my experience. Can anyone recommend a good service provider for a hobby phone. Something where I can talk and text and not have a monthly payment but instead low cost prepaid minutes/texts.

There's an app called 'burner' that allows you to get a separate phone number on your iPhone. If you are just looking for a second phone number this is the best - if you are worried about someone seeing your minutes it may not be the best option.

This app does seem to be a great compromise, but sometimes an app will not perform as advertised on your smartphone just because Zeus, oh he of all things electronic, has decided that he is having a shitty day and you don't deserve to have fully functional technology at your disposal.
As a compromise between technology and privacy, I use Google Voice and G-chat to accept phone calls from people with gmail accounts.
Works for me. for those who want a different option, an easier option, with Very Little Set-up,
I suggest tracfone. They offer a 30minute & 30 service day card, and also a pop-up for service day extension after purchasing the $99 1 year 400 minute airtime card. An extra year, iirc.
I miss work. *sigh*
