Brevity isn't always my forte.
Working on it though.
Charlie's quote spoke only for himself, really, but once it went viril enough to make Bartlett's or something, it became one of those microcosmic notions that reflect some macrocosmic "truism?" And like any truism, it is only true in its own context, same as "clothes make the man," or, "beauty is skin deep." So if I look at Mahata Ghandi as a way of refuting the "clothes make the man" truism, and someone else say, "Oh, but look at N_______--fill in your choice of GQ dandy--I can only concede by asserting the integrity of the truism.
So I was the one who responded saying that Charlie speaks for all of us. I wasn't saying that GaGambler quoting Charlie Sheen speaks for all of us, nor was I asserting that GaGambler assumed OR himself asserted that Charlie spoke for all of us.
And it was part of the bet, sort of, that I totally reverse my stand and embrace the truism.
99.9999% of the time I spend online, I'm alone with my laptop, desktop, or iPod. Last Sunday morning I was at the coffeehouse and sharing the general tone of the goings on with others. Instead of following each other's ramblings online, we were just leaning over and eyeing each other's screen, each of us remaining logged in to our own thing.
The Charlie Sheen quote had very surreal and hilarious significance that someone (Robbin) would at that particular moment put it on the board. So my comment(s) were aimed at the people I was having coffee with as much or more than those on the board. The bet referred to whose side the next poster would take, and you posted, and you know the rest.
I made the statement, not you. And my statement wasn't meant to assert that you DID make any statement that you didn't make. I think anyone reading the train would realize who said what. And, in the end, my focus was more on the crowd at the coffeehouse than the board.
I really am sorry if that caused any consternation, I really am. It was yet another example of being too cheerful for efficient etiquette and communication on all fronts. Hope this lets us bury that particular hatchet.
