The debt ceiling needs to be raised and the government needs to be funded after 12/11.  If those two things are not done, the economy will go into a tailspin.  Right now we have the only strong economy in the world but it's being dragged down by weakness in China and Europe.  If we shoot out own economy in the foot, it will tank.  The only people who want that are the most extreme right wing Republicans.  It will also hurt whoever is the Republican nominee for Prez.

...doesn't have a clue what the debt ceiling is.  And he's the second most popular Republican!!

I'll explain it simply for the benefit of our righty morons here:  Let's say you have a credit card limit of $5,000.  Somehow you manage to run up charges of $7,000.  So you call your credit card company and ask that they raise your credit limit (debt ceiling) to match the debt you already have.  They raise your debt ceiling so you figure you can do it again and again until you're hopelessly in debt and can't get out of it.

The answer is to balance your budget so that you don't have to ask for your debt ceiling to be raised.  But small government righties don't seem to want to or be able to do that.  They just keep charging everything to the old credit card then refuse to pay for the stuff they already charged.

...They want one of their own to be Speaker and they don't want to compromise with the Boehner Brigade.  They won't go along with one of Boehner's Boys and neither will the Dems, who also get to vote for Speaker.

Hopefully, we'll get to see the Republicans do this:

There is a large minority in this country that's angry at government and the way this country has changed around them.  They don't really understand why and are easy to manipulate. But this is nothing new.  Sinclair Lewis wrote about it back in the 1930s in "It Can't Happen Here."  This quote is attributed to him but never appeared in the book.  But it smacks of the truth.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross."

When I called these GOP party leaders and GOP representatives in Washington DC.
The GOP animal house and now I am proven right.
They cannot even led themselves and how are they going to lead this country?
This is embarrassing for these clowns. Lol

I agree - it's better for you to leave now rather than slink away ignominiously with your tails between your legs as the TER righties did when the election results were announced in 2008 & 2012.

Don't let the TER door hit you in the ass on the way out!

When you point out their stupidity as a political party or supporters.
I know let's blame the person who is calling us out on our bullshit.

If you don't like it clown too bad.
The GOP animal house is living up their name and I love the fact.
It pisses you off and you can't take the heat.
So go cry somewhere else because you also have proven my point.

We don't run away like you, but come up with counter answers to people's bullshit.

Goldwater, btw, seems like a moderate compared to the know-nothings on the right today.  In fact, the party was partly built upon the ashes of the American Party of the 1850s.  Coincidently, they were also called the "Know Nothings" and were anti-Catholic as well as anti-immigrant

To be a Republican, or even just a conservative it appears you have to believe in "God and country" and all socially conservative bullshit and faux patriotism that goes along with it, but to be a Democrat it appears you have to embrace socialism and political correctness among other things I don't believe in.

I can no more be a Republican who hates religion than I can be a Democrat who hates  socialism. Why do you think I vote for gridlock?

If you count all the disaffected supporters of Trump, Carson, and Fiorina on the right and add them to the sizeable number of Sanders supporters, you might just find that "they" are not in the minority after all.

Bush was reelected in 2004 largely by scaring his "base" the Bible thumpers into believing that the very institute of marriage was under attack. Obama won largely in 2008 by promising stupid people "free stuff" History is full of stupid people being manipulated into voting for liars and cheats.

One thing about our two party system that I take comfort from, the fascists are counterbalanced by the communists, so those of us in the middle can take comfort that it's unlikely either will ever achieve a plurality, much less a majority.

Personally, I don't have a party, nor have I even decided which one of the people I don't like that I will eventually vote for. Right now it looks like a toss up between Trump and Hillary for me. If neither of them are there at the end I have to confess I have absolutely no idea who I could bring myself to vote for. Sanders against anyone would be an easy decision for me, more difficult would be Biden against someone like Rubio.

Because you assume ANYTHING Congress does will just make things worse.  So here's a serious question:what if Congress lets the gov't. shut down and doesn't increase the debt ceiling so the US defaults? How would this not tank the economy and cause a crash in commodity prices?  Such as oil.  Would you be happy then?

Government is a necessary evil. For example, regulation. Corporations certainly are not capable of regulating themselves, and that is a necessary function of Government. The Congress also has the task of "keeping our doors open" and raising the debt ceiling is certainly part of that. I would also 100% oppose Congress shutting down the government over something as relatively trivial as funding Planned Parenthood.

The Republican controlled Congress has failed to stand up to Obama when they should have, this would be a horrible time and place to finally make a stand.

and wishing the government to default would be a huge step towards anarchy.

This country is full of communists on one side and fascists on the other with the rest of us caught in the middle. Personally I am thankful for our two party system which tends to cancel out the extremists on both sides. but that doesn't mean I want them "meddling" in areas where the private sector is better equipped. Areas like health care and job creation to name a couple. When the government "creates" jobs we end up with more and more government clones like WillyWonka creating a bigger and bigger drain on the system. What government SHOULD do is create an environment where private industry can thrive and regulate said private industry as to keep the playing field level.

For some reason government either seeks to stifle free enterprise like a Bernie Sanders would do, or they favor Big Business like Obama and the most of the rest from both sides of the aisle as that is where their bread is buttered.

The NYT article is excerpts. I’d like to read the entire delivery but can’t find it.

In some respects Goldwater would have aligned more with the “No Nothings” than the Republicans. Goldwater was more a libertarian and than he was a conservative. The No Nothings refused to take a stance against slavery, much the same as Goldwater refused to take a stand against abortion.

This viewpoint from Goldwater is not unusual at all as he was essentially the leading libertarian of the day (like the Pauls but with more stature yet still easy to label as crazy). Is the take away that people involved in politics that refuse to give an inch on certain moral issues are too divisive to be political partners?

If it hadn’t been for ardent religious factions that were relentlessly against slavery would Lincoln and the Republicans had succeeded (granted, hard to call The Civil War a success at the time. Historically very much so).

Religiousity in the country has always come in waves, sometimes referred to as awakenings. I sincerely do not believe the passionate and zealous religious types woke up one day a generation or so ago, got together, and decided to take over the government in order to force the Christian version of Sharia on everyone. No, it was the direct result of a major moral event that was thrust upon them. Of course that was Roe v. Wade in 1973. That and several other examples that can be construed as attacks of Christians. Granted it’s been going on long enough that the chicken or the egg argument comes into play. What’s most important most recently is the secular, anti religious has learned that certain accusations, founded or not, get amplified in the media (main stream and social). The far left has learned how to use these mere accusations as political weapons. After awhile the religious are to some degree only fighting back.

I’m about as un-religious as Goldwater yet just as conservative but I’m far more compassionate to and understanding of the “Religious Right” than Goldwater. It’s probably because I’m Pro-Life, unlike Goldwater
